11. Some Factors in the Recognition of Tachistoscopically Presented Alphabetical Arrays
- Author
-
Fudin, Robert and Kenny, John T.
- Abstract
Six-letter nonsense arrays, constructed from a 12-letter population which was not made known to 20 Ss, were tachistoscopically shown successively in the right visual field (RVF) and left visual field (LVF) at three displacements from a central fixation point. Recognition scores were higher for stimuli in the RVF at each displacement. In each case RVF superiority was limited to letters in the first array-half (letters 1, 2, 3). These results agree with prior findings obtained with targets made up of six letters known to S(Fudin, 1969). Reportability of a tachistoscopically exposed letter, in part, is a function of the relationship between its retinal location and the delay before it is scanned. Location determines the amount of information a letter contains before it starts to fade-out (the more acute the area, the greater the information), delay determines the period of information dissipation prior to scanning. These ideas were used to explain the contrast between high error scores for middle-array letters in the bow-shaped error curves found in this experiment and the low values often reported for these letters when targets are shown across fixation, and the finding that the difference between error scores for letters in the first and second array-halves was greater for targets at each displacement in the right than the left visual field.

14. Leukocytic Alkaline Phosphatase
- Author
-
KENNY, JOHN J. and MOLONEY, WILLIAM C.
- Abstract
1. Evidence of a marked difference in alkaline phosphatase activity in the leukocytes of normal subjects and individuals with chronic myelogenous leukemia has been provided by observations on the behavior of the enzyme following prolonged incubation and during pyogenic infection. 2. Therapy with radiation and radiomimetic drugs in chronic myelogenous leukemia and myeloid metaplasia resulted in a marked fall in leukocyte count but no change was observed in the relative population of alkaline phosphatase positive and negative cells. 3. In our laboratory histochemical and biochemical values for leukocyte alkaline phosphatase have been similar to those reported in the literature for typical cases of chronic myelogenous leukemia and most leukemoid reactions. However, in certain cases parodoxical findings have been noted in which histochemical and biochemical studies were inconsistent with the pathologic diagnosis. 4. The inadequacies of purely morphologic criteria in these atypical cases were noted and the desirability of the further development of cytochemical methods has been pointed out.

16. Polycythemia Vera Associated With Lymphomatous Diseases and Myeloma

HEINLE, EDWARD W., SARASTI, HERNANDO O., GARCIA, DIOSDADO, KENNY, JOHN J., and WESTERMAN, MAXWELL P.
- Abstract
THE OCCURRENCE of malignancies of various types with polycythemia vera is well known.1-4 The hematologic abnormalities most frequently associated with this disorder are chronic myelogenous leukemia, myelofibrosis, and acute leukemia. Lymphomatous disorders such as chronic lymphatic leukemia or lymphoma have rarely been observed in these patients 3,5,6 and multiple myeloma only infrequently noted.7-17 Since an interrelationship between disorders of marrow origin has been suggested,18-20 further observations on patients with associated disorders, particularly lymphoma or multiple myeloma and polycythemia vera, may be useful. We have had the opportunity to document these combinations in three patients. REPORT OF CASES CASE 1. —K. C., an 83-year-old white woman, was admitted to the Presbyterian-University Hospital in May 1961 for evaluation of lymphocytosis. In 1955 during an admission to St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh, she was found to have splenomegaly, but no lymphadenopathy or hepatomegaly. She had noted increasing weakness and modest pruritus

CERAMICS ,ART ,CLAY ,ART materials ,KILNS - Abstract
The article offers information on ceramic art. According to the author, clay is a material that has a lot to offer to anyone who works with it, especially to artists who have a feeling for form and design, as it can be shaped in many ways. When making ceramics, the clay must be fired through the use of kilns. It notes that slab building, which involves the process of rolling a layer of clay with a rolling pin, is the simplest method of shaping clay. The process of rolling clay into ropes is called coil building.

Engineering and Applied Science - Abstract
NOTE: Text or symbols not renderable in plain ASCII are indicated by [...]. Abstract is included in .pdf document. This paper describes an investigation of radiation from an electric point dipole situated in a cold, collisionless, homogeneous, electronic plasma medium. Two limiting cases of a gyroelectric medium are studied. The magnetostatic biasing field [...] is first taken to be equal to zero, making the medium isotropic, and then it is taken to be infinite, causing a uniaxial anisotropy. The retarded electromagnetic fields and the instantaneous and averaged values of irreversibly radiated power [...] are calculated. In each medium, the partial differential equations resulting from the two-sided Laplace transformation of Maxwell's equations with an oscillating electric dipole source and the constitutive equations (derived from the appropriate form of the Lorentz force equation) are solved. A particular path deformation of the Laplace inversion integral reveals that the electromagnetic fields and [...] are exactly expressible in terms of circular, cylindrical, and two-variabled Lommel functions. Asymptotic expressions and graphical results of numerical calculations of these quantities are presented. For the isotropic case, it is shown that the retarded fields are well behaved for all space and time (excluding the origin, of course). [...] eventually settles down to the result derived from the conventional time-harmonic analysis when the dipole oscillation frequency [...] is greater than the plasma frequency [...] . When the value of [...] is less than that of [...], [...] eventually oscillates at a frequency [.....] with zero average value. When the medium is uniaxial, the fields are finite everywhere except at the dipole. The amplitude of the fields does, however, increase with increasing time. This is quite different from the ordinary time-harmonic solution which ignores all time variations different from [...] and which is singular on a conical surface defined by [...] for [...]. The value of [...] in a uniaxial medium is found to be equal to the value of [.....] of a dipole in vacuum. It is also shown that the so-called conventional expression for time-averaged radiated power will not give a sensible result since it contains the retarded electric field which never settles down to a steady-state variation with time. The quantity [...], on the other hand, does not increase with time, oscillates only at the source frequency, and has a well-defined time average.
