General considerations based on changes in mutant frequency and heritability . Radiation Botany 13 , 1–12, 1973.—Mutant frequency and heritability of mutagenically treated populations of self-pollinating diploid plants were formulated and numerically calculated, and the practical utility of delayed selections in mutation breeding was discussed based on the results. Delayed selections are shown to be generally much more efficient than the ordinary M 2 -selections for obtaining mutants such as those occurring at some multiple loci. Recurrent mutagenic treatments greatly raise the efficiency of delayed selections especially when the breeding objective is some complex character affected by multiple loci. It was also suggested that mutagenic treatments should be applied to embryos of plants rather than to florets or gametophytes.
