1. Effect of Taurine on Alteration in Adrenal Functions Induced by Stress

Abstract

When rats were exposed to immobilized cold stress, adrenaline content in the adrenal gland as well as noradrenaline content in the brain stem were reduced drastically, while noradrenaline content in the atria was not altered by the application of stress. Oral administrations of taurine (4-7 g/kg/day, for 3 days) prevented the stress-induced decline of adrenaline in the adrenal gland and this preventive effect could not be duplicated by the administration of L-isoleucine or DL-methionine. In hypophysectomized rats, the stress also induced a significant fall in adrenaline content of the adrenal gland, however taurine administration did not show significant preventive effects on the decline in adrenal catecholamines. The immobilized cold stress induced a significant increase in blood sugar and this increase was antagonized by pretreatment with taurine. Taurine had no significant effects on the stress-induced increase in the activity of adrenal tyrosine hydroxylase and the turnover rate of adrenaline in the adrenal gland measured by the rate of decline of this amine following alpha-methyl-tyrosine administration. The administration of taurine, in both in vivo and in vitro, inhibited the release of adrenaline from adrenal medullary granules, but that of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase was not significantly affected. The stress-induced elevation of the blood level of corticosterone was not affected by taurine administration. These findings indicate that taurine antagonizes the stress-induced elevation of blood sugar by reducing adrenaline output from the adrenal gland. The regulatory mechanism most likly involves the inhibition of adrenaline release from adrenal medullary granules, possibly by stabilizing the membrane of the granules.

Abstract

The rate of the alkali-catalysed formation of acetoguanamine from dicyandiamide and acetonitrile in 2-methoxyethanol and dimethyl sulfoxide and other solvents has been measured by means of UV spectrophotometry. The rate is expressed as υ = k 2 K 1 [KOH][dicyandiamide]-[CH 3 CN]/(1 + K 1 [KOH]) in 2-methoxyethanol. An equilibrium exists between acetonitrile and the complex of the base and acetonitrile. The application of the rate data with methyl-, dimethyl-, phenyl- and methoxyacetonitrile in solvent 2-methoxyethanol to the Taft's equation gives a ϱ*-value of +2.7. The rate in 2-methoxyethanol-dimethyl sulfoxide mixtures of various composition follows approximately first-order equation with nitrile, and increases with increasing molar fraction of dimethyl sulfoxide in the mixture solvents. A probable mechanism involving an addition of base to acetonitrile and a nucleophilic attack of the resulting addition complex on the cyano carbon of dicyandiamide is suggested and the solvent effect on the rate is discussed. The former step is rate-determining in dimethyl sulfoxide, while the latter step determines the rate in pure 2 -methoxyethanol.

Abstract

Glasses of the SiO2Li2O·1.34 Al2O3 system were separated by heat-treatment into two liquid phases: silica rich droplets and silica poor matrix glass. The metastable miscibility gap was determined from the composition dependence of the lattice parameters of β-quartz solid solution precipitated in the glasses. On the basis of the miscibility gap, it was confirmed that β-quartz solid solution crystallized within the silica poor liquid phase surrounding the silica rich droplets. The silica rich phase remained in the form of droplets during heat-treatment below the immiscibility temperature, and it was dissolved in the β-quartz solid solution upon heat-treatment above the immiscibility temperature.

Abstract

It is well known that Pyrex glass, borosilicate glass with high silica-content, is more difficult to be melted homogeneously than other glasses, because striae, knots, and stones very often arise during melting. It is the purpose to confirm the cause of striae, knots, and stones arising during melting in commercial Pyrex glass wares. Experimental equipments used, are centrifuge, interferometer, and strain analyzer.Most of striae have lower refractive index. They arise from raw material difficult to melt, SiO2, at early stage. At later stage they mainly arise from surface volatilization. The striae with higher refractive index arise from Al2O3, ZrO2 exuded by refractory corrosion, and also stagnants which originate from refractory corrosion have higher refractive index.The knots occur mainly from segregation of silica sands in raw materials and the refractive index is lower. But the knots with higher refractive index can be seen occasionally. They arise in the melting process of stones from refractories.The stones almost arise from segregation of silica sands in raw materials as well as knots. The refractive index of the surrounding glass is lower than that of the parent glass. The stones with higher refractive index originate from refractories.

Abstract

The electronic spectra of impurities in molecular crystals are usually characterized by the presence of phonon sidebands.1–5 For a forbidden transition, the coupling with phonons may enhance the transition probability and cause phonon sidebands, which may become more intense with increasing temperature.6 For an allowed transition, sideband structures are the manifestation of the coupling between electrons and local phonons.3 If the lattice distortion around the impurity is small, the sidebands display the density of lattice phonon states. In this case the relative intensity of the sidebands to the zero-phonon line is a measure of the strength of the electronic coupling of the impurity to the surrounding molecules. If the lattice distortion is large, coupling to the local phonon modes would affect the sideband structures. Studies of electron-phonon coupling have provided important information on the impurity state in the crystal.

Abstract

The Goldstone model of a complex scalar field with a biquadratic interaction term in the Lagrangian is studied in the pair approximation. It is found that a zero-mass particle, the Goldstone particle, exists in the symmetry-breaking solution, and that the original symmetry of the theory rearranges itself into the «gauge invariance» of the massless field. The viewpoint adopted is that of “dynamical maps» which allows the theory to be developed clearly and unambiguously, while doing away with the Heisenberg, Schrodinger and interaction representations.

Abstract

The rates of the formation of benzoguanamine from dicyandiamide and benzonitrile in the presence of a basic catalyst, have been measured by means of UV spectrophotometry. The rate is expressed as ν = k × [dicyandiamide]·[benzonitrile]·[KOH]. Since the addition of a small amount of cyanamide retards the rate, cyanamide cannot be an intermediate. Application of the rate data observed with p -methyl-, methoxy-, and chlorobenzonitriles to the Hammett's equation gives a positive ϱ value of +1·82. A probable mechanism involving a rate-determining attack of the conjugate base of dicyandiamide on benzonitrile is suggested and discussed.

Abstract

In the 2nd report, authors confirmed that the gas ratio increase according to temperature rise of tip and so it becomes excess oxygen flame. In this report, authors introduced the relative formulas between gas flow and tip temperature, gas ratio etc. to explain the aforesaid phenomena about low pressure type welding torch, and then compared with the test results. The formula (24) comparatively agreed with our test rerults.

Abstract

We studied a newtype of weld groove named "Fusion type", which may be used for elimination of rail joints by arc welding. Using a ordinary mild steel electrode, the D. C. arc welding process was appllied under condition similar to that of field welding. Preheating as a preparatory measure for welding was not allowed.The result of the experiment were as follows.(1) " Fusion type " proved a suitable welded joint, which may be used for field welding of rail.(2) Bevel cut of railend by machining or flame cutting as preparatory step for arc welding, was not necessary.(3) As the color of rail become light red by arc fusion without preheating, the rail could be welded with good weldability.(4) Perfect annealing was found to be a desirable heattreatment for eliminating the residual stress and the hardened structure at the heat affected zpne.(5) Penetration of rail base was found to be more important than that of other portion of the rail as regards statical bending strength.(6) Required bending strength of rail joints was a obtained by a skillfull and careful operation.

Abstract

An adaptive method for detecting change in digitized cardiotachometer recordings has been developed which takes into account the nonstationary statistical structure of the data. The digitized data are smoothed to reduce the variance at high frequencies caused by discontinuities inherent in cardiotachometer output. Based on a first-order autoregression, which has been shown to be appropriate for heart rate data, the adaptive procedure uses estimates of the parameters which are most influenced by the recent observations. Decreasing weight is given to past prestimulus data, and the estimates are updated with each stimulus. A test for change is then applied to the poststimulus regions at each time point, yielding a t statistic. The t 2 's can then be averaged to give a test for change over an interval.

Abstract

The present paper deals with the results of surveys on the incidence of cereal stripe rust, caused by Pucc. glumarum E. et H., in Fukushima Prefecture, and consideration on the regional difference of its distribution.The disease appears almost all over the prefecture, but it is usually not severe, except for Shirakawa district, where it attains sometimes to an epidemic extent in individual fields.The following factors are considered to be the cause of occurrence of this epidemic; (1) delayed growth of the cereal crops as the result of cold winter; (2) delayed appearing of leaf rust which may compete with stripe rust; (3) low temperatures during late May-early June; (4) proximity to localities where the disease appears earlier, i. e. Kantodistrict and other south-western localities of Japan; (5) prevalence of south and south-west wind s in the season and (6) cultivation of susceptible varieties.

Abstract

Logical circuits using Esaki diodes, and which are based on a principle similar to parametron (subharmonic oscillator element) circuits, are described. Two diodes are used in series to form a basic element called a twin, and a binary digit is represented by the polarity of the potential induced at the middle point of the twin, which is controlled by the majority of input signals applied to the middle point. Unilateral transmission of information in circuits consisting of cascaded twins is achieved by dividing the twins into three groups and by energizing each group one after another in a cyclic manner. Experimental results with the clock frequency as high as 30 mc are reported. Also, a delay-line dynamic memory and a nondestructive memory in matrix form are discussed.

Abstract

In order to obtain the degree of crystallinity of poly(vinylidene fluoride) crystal form II as a function of temperature, the temperature dependences of specific volumes of the crystalline and amorphous phases, $$\bar V_c $$ and $$\bar V_a $$ , respectively, were obtained as follows: $$\begin{gathered} \bar V_c = 0.532 + 0.7 \times 10^{ - 4t} + 4 \times 10^{ - 7t^2 } , \hfill \\ \bar V_a = 0.589 + 3.6 \times 10^{ - 4t} + 4 \times 10^{ - 7t^2 } \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ , wheret is the temperature in °C and the unit of ¯V is cm3/g. The value of $$\bar V_c $$ was calculated from unit cell determinations by X-ray measurements of a specimen with form II over the temperature range of 20 to 120 °C. The value of $$\bar V_a $$ was extrapolated from liquid data based on the analysis of the temperature dependences of the specific volume of the specimen and of $$\bar V_c $$ .

Abstract

Summary The present experiments aimed at examining the results obtainable both by the intersection of the posterior commissure and by the stimulation of the pretectal region, the midbrain and other parts with an intention of making the course of light reflex pathwxy more clear-cut and precise. In twenty adult rabbits the parts causing a pupilloconstriction by the electric stimulation were looked for, and the apperance of evoked pctential from these parts upon photic stimulus and that of responses from the parts not causing a pupillary symptom but responding to a photic stimulus were pursued by means of the cathode ray oscillograph. The results are summarized as follows:. 1. The parts which cause a pupillccon striction as the reaction to electric stimulation are divided into two groups, one accompanied by evoked potential. The parts at which an evoked potential is recorded can be thought to receive an impulse from retina and to form a part of the light reflex pathway. On the other hand, those at which no evoked potential appears are regarded as a pupillocon strictor pathway but as having nothing to do with the light reflex pathway, though there are found some parts with exceptional respons. 2. As the parts which cause the bilateral pupilloconstriction upon electric stimulaticn and do give rise to the evoked potential upon bilateral photic stimulation, are to be mentioned the midline part of the posterior commissure including its neighbouring parts, and the midline part on the base of menencephalic central gray matter. The parts which cause a pupilloconstriction of similar degree on either side give birth to an evoked potintial of nearly similar wave form to the bilateral photic stimulus. 3. The parts which cause the contralateral pupilloconstriction upon electric stimulation and which give rise to an obviously evoked potential upon photic stimulus given to the pupilloconstrictor side, are the pretectal region. especially Area pretfctalis propria, Nucl. lentiformis pars parvocel-lularis and Nucl. interstitials cormissurae posterioria. The nature of the evoked potentials reveals that these parts represent some sort of relay nuclei in the light reflex pathway. 4. The parts which cause the ipsilateral pupillcconstriction and at which an evoked potential appears, are in the main the descending peduncle of the posterior commissure and the pudloconstrictor nucleus. the evoked potential at the descending Feduncle of the posterior commisure shows a monophasic negative wave, while that at the pupilioconstrictor nucleus gives a triphaslc wave. A distinct difference is always Obse vable between them. 5. Even when evoked potentials upon photic stimulus can be recorded from some parts of the lateral geniculate body, the superior colliculus, the optic radiation and the mesencephalic reticular formation, there is missed any pupilloconstrictor response upon electric stimulation there. An evoked potential of the fibres reaching from the optic tract to the pretectal region, if any, must be overlappd and overturned by the above-mentioned potentials and, therefore, is indeterminable so far under this circumstance. From the above data, we believe. we could demonstrate the validity of conclusion obtained from intersection of the posterior commissure and from stimulation of the pretectal region and the midbrain in rabbits, that an afferent path of light reflex changes neuron in the pretectal region. makes a complete decusation at the posterior commissure, passes through the descending peduncle of the posterior commisure and ultimately reaches the pupilloconstrictor nucleus.

Abstract

An example of a combination of spontaneous and intrinsic breakdown of symmetry is studied. When the effect of spontaneous breakdown is much stronger than that of intrinsic breakdown, the original symmetry is replaced by a new symmetry and the symmetry transformation is mainly taken care of by the transformation of spinless boson. When the intrinsic breaking term becomes stronger, the symmetry transformation comes closer to its original form, while the spinless boson remains. The divergence of helicity current written in terms of physical field is obtained in the form effectively similar to PCAC. A possible application to the spurion theory of the weak phenomena is suggested.

Abstract

Regulation of prolactin secretion in pituitary is considered to be mostly carried with the action of prolactin inhibiting factor in hypothalamus. We have investigated on the subject of prolactin releasing factor in the hypothalamus of rats in last stage of pregnancy using puerperal and ovariectomized rats as recipients. After prepared the cell-free system of pregnant rat hypothalamus with sonic oscillator, supernatant was produced by ultracentrifuge (25,000 X g, 30 min.) and utilized for the experiments. When the extract was injected intramuscularly to puerperal rats (48-60 hours after delivery), serum prolactin values increased gradually to 3 times of control values, but pituitary prolactin values showed the variation with decrease and recovery. The control values were obtained by determination after injection of cerebral cortical extract to puerperal rats. After administration of a extract of non-pregnant rat hypothalamus to puerperal rats, serum prolactin values decreased and pituitary prolactin values increased antagonistically. In the ovariectomized rats pretreated with estradiol and progesterone, serum prolactin values increased in 1 hour after administration of the extract of pregnant rat hypothalamus, but pituitary prolactin values did not show any variation. The present experiment suggests that the prolactin secretion promoting factor exists in the hypothalamus of pregnant rats and predominates over as compared with PIF in last stage of pregnancy.
