24. Model tests on the fundamentals of marine propeller stresses1

Abstract

In this paper an experimental study on the stresses in the blades of Marine Propellers due to centrifugal forces and hydrodynamically generated steady and unsteady loadings has been presented. The fundamental relations between the propeller blade stresses and the conditions of propeller loading, propeller speed and ship speed have been verified by means of model experiments. According to the general laws of similarity, extrapolation factors have been derived for the prediction of the stresses to be expected at full size. Comparison of model and full – size – measurements for a firm verification of the presented methods, are strongly recommended.

26. Congenital Diffuse Bronchio-Alveoliectasis: a Variant of Congenital Cystic Disease of the Lungs

Abstract

This report presents the clinical and pathologic features of diffuse cystic transformation of a lobe of the lung in a newborn. Because of the rather unusual but interesting histologic picture which distinctly segregated it from the so-called congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lungs, the name congenital diffuse bronchio-alveoliectasis was suggested. This apparently rare anomaly manifested as respiratory distress since the patient's birth. The patient underwent lobectomy with an uneventful postoperative course.

43. Viral Hepatitis in Health Care Personnel Working With Drug Abusers

Abstract

Occupational medicine is concerned with the health hazards confronting people in their jobs. Peculiarly, doctors, nurses and medical technicians tend to pay little attention to the risks they themselves face in their own occupation, perhaps with the notable exception of radiation problems. Infectious diseases particularly represent an occupational hazard to health care workers who care for patients with these afflictions viral hepatitis is among the major ones. Health care staff, in turn, may become a source of infection to their patients. Results of a preliminary study of health care personnel in a hospital with a high incidence of hepatitis among patients credit a high “hepatitis awareness” among staff for a low hepatitis morbidity.
