Abstract

The article presents the historical data on Abraham Lincoln's only lecture on "Discoveries and Inventions." The paper's thesis is that the experience as a lecturer helped in his decision to speak on a political subject at Cooper Union in February 1860, one that helped in making him President. The first version of the lecture was delivered before the Young Men's Association in Bloomington, Illinois on April 9, 1958. He rewrote it for the presentation before Phi Alpha Society of Illinois College.

Abstract

The experiences of Abraham Lincoln with lectures as a form of public discourse are explored in this essay. Lincoln experienced greater success with subsequent speeches than he did with the series of lectures he delivered. Although his success in this speech form was limited, an understanding of his experiences here may assist in a clearer understanding of the communication behavior of Lincoln.

Abstract

Duplication of the colon is an exceedingly rare anomaly. Thirty cases of this deformity with variations and associated malformations have been reported. Bornstein1states that cystic saccular structures have been erroneously described as duplications of the colon. Van Zwalenburg2and Ravitch3,4suggest dividing the anomalies into two main groups: 1. Large diverticuli or cysts (the type seen more frequently). Such cysts lie within the mesentery, between its root and the normal bowel; their course is more or less parallel to the bowel. They are not accompanied by duplication of other structures. Complication (volvulus, ulceration, or perforation) is usually produced by the size of the diverticulum. 2. Duplication of the structures derived from the hindgut. Doubling of the bladder and urethra is invariably associated with colonic duplication of this type. Symptoms are rare, except when the anomaly is accompanied by such developmental errors as imperforate anus or agenesis

Abstract

Results obtained from participation in previous atomic tests proved conclusively that nuclear detonations of 3 KT and higher could be detected and displayed on the indicators of standard X band radar bombing systems and Ku-band radar systems. Participation in Operation UPSHOT-KNOTHOLE provided an opportunity to test new techniques believed applicable to an Indirect Bomb Damage Assessment (IBDA) system as well as to investigate certain phenomena associated with a nuclear detonation which might affect the interpretation of the radar display., Report on Operation Upshot-Knothole Project 6.2.

Abstract

The evaluation was conducted to determine the adequacy of new drafting equipment now commercially available for use in producing axonometric drawings. Also the feasibility of beginning to implement the wide usage of the axonometric concept for engineering drawings and Transportation Packaging Orders (TPOs) within the Air Force was investigated. As the result of this study, a drafting system for preparing engineering drawings and TPOs has emerged. The dimensioning system used was adapted from MIL-STD-100 and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Manual +14.5. The combining of the drafting and the dimensioning system is herein called the 'true-position engineering drafting system'. (Author)

Abstract

This report summarizes the results of a study on the life cycle of a member of the trematode family Acanthooolpidae, genus Stephanostomum Looss, 1899, which was carried on during the summers of 1948, 1949, 1951, and the winter of 1948-49 at the Marine Station of the College or the Pacific at Dillon Beach, California. Only one previous experimental work has been done on the life cycle of any member of this family. Martin (1939) reported the life cycle of Stephanostomum tenue (Linton) which he had obtained at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Modifications of his technical procedures have been used in this study. It is hoped that this endeavor will further facilitate investigations in life cycle studies. The results obtained may be of economic value because the adult members of the family are parasitic in marine fishes, many of which are of commercial importance.
