Americans of the U.S. origin have been unaware of the perplexing problem of nationality confronting the newer American and utterly indifferent to it; but a World War followed by a quota immigration act has forcibly impressed on thousands of first and second-generation Americans the disastrous dash of varying nationality laws, which deny to some men all nationality and burden others with double citizenship. The U.S. holds to both the law of the soil and the law of the blood, and mixes with these the principle of naturalization; the result is unparalleled complexity and confusion.

1. The clearance of a tracer dose of [14C]bilirubin from the plasma was studied in patients with Gilbert's syndrome, congenital non-haemolytic jaundice, haemolytic jaundice and in normal subjects. Clearance was significantly impaired in the patients with Gilbert's syndrome and in those with congenital non-haemolytic jaundice when compared with the normal subjects, and was normal in the patient with haemolytic jaundice. 2. Treatment for 2 weeks with phenobarbitone (180 mg/day) lowered the plasma bilirubin concentration and improved all indices of plasma clearance of the isotope in patients with Gilbert's syndrome, so that they became indistinguishable from those of normal subjects. The improvement in plasma [14C]bilirubin clearance in these patients was associated with modest increases in hepatic bilirubin glucuronyl transferase in some subjects. 3. Phenobarbitone treatment improved plasma bilirubin concentrations and plasma [14C]bilirubin clearance in patients with congenital non-haemolytic jaundice, so that they resembled those seen in patients with untreated Gilbert's syndrome. Despite this improvement hepatic bilirubin glucuronyl transferase activity remained undetectable. 4. These results are compatible with the hypothesis that Gilbert's syndrome is a manifestation of a relative deficiency of hepatic bilirubin glucuronyl transferase, and differs from congenital non-haemolytic jaundice only in severity.

Sufficient time has not elapsed in which to draw definite conclusions, but this fact remains, that up to the present time our experiences with operations for cancer in all parts of the body prove that an operation which gives the least number of recurrences must conform to the following general principles, namely, "the complete removal of the diseased organ, and as much of the surrounding tissues as is possible, together with the removal of the regional lymphatic glands which drain the part affected."There exists at the present time no other disease

The occurrence of postoperative cystitis is still of sufficient frequency to warrant a discussion and presentation of some of the newer thoughts and methods for the prevention of this condition. A troublesome postoperative cystitis, either temporary or permanent, has often spoiled an otherwise excellent surgical result.Heretofore a postoperative cystitis has been considered by many authors solely as a cystitis due to catheterization. While this view is largely correct, it is our purpose to show that preventable, abnormal anatomic conditions of the bladder, dependent on the surgical procedure itself, are in many cases the real predisposing etiologic factors in the production of the complication, and that the catheter per se is for the most part merely the exciting cause.All authors agree that for the production of a cystitis it is necessary to have, besides the bacterial infection, one or more of the following predisposing factors, i, e., retention, trauma,

A 21-yr.-old woman was found to possess the ability to discriminate colors through her fingertips under conditions which controlled for normal visual information, order of stimulus presentation, experimenter-produced cues, and textural differences. A forced-choice method employing four different colors and knowledge of results was used. The data indicated that light on the stimulus cards was necessary for her discrimination.
