Children are taught that political trials are indigenous to totalitarian states, and wholly outside American tradition. But though they may be alien to the American way of life as defined in primers, this does not insure that they do not occur. From various examples alone it should be evident that American jurisprudence is not as far removed from that of Soviet courts as people would like to believe. It is secondarily a history of criminal law. But though this is so, the originality and importance of author Stephen's treatise lie in its historical character. Their merits are great, but among these merits can hardly be numbered originality. Of the historical portion of the book, one may speak in very different terms. By this they can only mean either that Hiss is shielding another or that the mystery is locked up in the allegedly tortuous mind of American writer Whittaker Chambers, with Hiss as ignorant and as innocent, as the rest of the people of the plot that destroyed him.

The name Icelandic opens up a question that has been much debated. Other names have been proposed for the language: Norse, Old Norse, Primitive Scandinavian, Old North German--this last by Conrad Manrer, the most distinguished Scandinavian scholar in Germany. The historical and biographical sagas give the fullest anti most vivid picture of early society and politics to be found anywhere out of Homer, and, in conjunction with the law-books compiled about the same time, they supply a mass of curious information respecting the legal ideas and legal arrangements of remote ancestors to which no parallel exists in any ancient or modern literature.

The execution of Hungary-based Imre Nagy and three of his associates is an act of barbarism. The Hungarian communique reciting the charges, the evidence and the sentences, is a crude piece of buffoonery that will deceive no one. That these four brave men refused to confess is, of course, the best proof of their innocence.

Jurists may still be wrangling over their concept of law, as German philosopher Immanuel Kant accused them of doing nearly two centuries ago. There are, nevertheless, some established principles governing these allegedly indefinable rules of conduct. No lawmaker can afford to disregard the fundamental principles of law and jurisprudence. If he does, the enforced rules will be law only in name, as were the so-called laws issued by dictators Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. Civilized nations have evolved these principles at the cost of millions of human lives, sacrificed in the struggle against tyranny, and no change in the substance of law should ignore them, for they are constituent parts of man's Bill of Rights and of the Western civilization. There can be no difference of opinion about the necessity of exterminating the monsters that were responsible for the unspeakable horrors in Europe and Japan.
