Zusammenfassung Vor kurzer Zeit wurden Methoden beschrieben nach welchen man rez. Netzebenen eines Kristalles mittels Rontgenstrahlen photographieren kann 1) . Es wurde behauptet dass die Intensitaten mit denen die Punkte aufgenommen werden, ohne Weiteres unter einander vergleichbar sind, weil die von den sekundaren Strahlen durchlaufenen Strecken gleich sind und diese Strahlen unter gleichen Winkeln den Film treffen. Man muss jedoch immerhin den Lorentzfaktor beachten. Dieser wird im Text allgemein fur Drehkristallaufnahmen abgeleitet; er lasst sich fur die genannten Methoden einfach gestalten. Ein Spektrograph zum Photographieren der nullten rez. Netzebene (Aequatorebene) wird beschrieben.

Summary A simple and exact formula for the breadth of Debye Scherrer lines is derived, with the assumption that the crystals have the same form and volume. This formula is used to evaluate the integral breadth as a function of the direction of the normal on the reflecting plane for some triclinic crystals. This leads to a partial justification of the Laue formula, at least for those crystals, which approximate an ellipsoid. It is shown that the value of the constant is 1. For a parallelopipedum another formula is given, so it might be possible to distinguish between these two cases. The volume of the crystals may be found from the half intensity breadth with a greater accuracy than from the integral breadth.

Zusammenfassung Die fruher beschriebene Methode 1 ) wird erweitert, wodurch einige Nachteile aufgehoben werden.

The precipitation process in gold-platinum alloys has been studied by means of X-rays. In the early stages of the process the normal reflections are accompanied by “side-bands” showing an asymmetrical distribution of intensity. A modification of the model of lattice modulations as proposed by Hargreaves accounts for all observed features. Part 2 of the paper gives the experimental evidence. In Part 3 a description is given of a general theory of side-bands, due to periodic distortions, with special regard to asymmetric distributions of intensity at both sides of a Debye-Scherrer line. The model chosen for this case has some undefined parameters, and it will be shown how these parameters can be adjusted in order to explain the features of the photographs. Finally, in the last part other models will be compared to the chosen one.

1. (1) A procedure for isolating pure ubiquinone-50 form horse heart is described. 2. (2) A method of determining the ubiquinone content of heart and heart-muscle preparation is give. 3. (3) Treatment of ubiquinone with ascorbic in HCl in the presence of pyrogallol gives a reduction product,in about 30% yield, whihc is not the smae as ubiquinol. Its properties suggest that is is ubichromanoll or derivative thereof. 4. (4) This product is not distinguishable from α-tocopherol by the procedure previously used for measuring the α-tocopherol content of heart-muscle preparationa nd is responsible for the “extra α-tocopherol” previoulsly reported therein. 5. (5) Vitamin K 1 treated under similar conditions also gives a stable reduction product which is also probably a chromanol. 6. (6) Our previous reporat that the Keilin and Hartree heart-muscle preparation contained α-tocopherol has been confiremd. The tocopherol was identified by chromatography on ZnCO 3 -impregnated paper and on alumina ( 14 C-labelled α-tocopherol acting as a marker), by its u.v.-absorption spectrum and by the absorption spectrum characteristic of α-tocopherylquinone obtained by oxidation with AuCl 3 . 7. (7) The Keilin and Hartree heart-muscle preparatino from horse containes on the average 0.4 μmole α-tocopherol/g protein (9 preparations) and 9.1 μmoles ubiquinone/g protein (9 preparations). For ox, the values are 0.8 (3 preparations) adn 2.9 (one determination) respectively. Little if any α-tocopherylquinone (less than μmole/g protein) was found in the ox preparation. 8. (8) Virtually all the α-tocopherol and ubiquinone found in the heart is located in the sarcosomes (mitochondria). 9. (9) α-Tocopherol is not a precursor in the biosyngthesis of ubiquinone in rabbit heart or liver. 10. (10) α-Tocopherol, α-tocopherylquinol adn ubiquinol inhibit the ATP-P 1 exchange reaction fo rat-liver mitochondria and stimulate the ATPase.

Summary A method is described for obtaining an image of the zero-order reciprocal net plane without any distortion of the picture. This may be important, as all rays reflected by the crystal travel to the film along paths of equal length. Apart from the fact, that they reach the film at a constant angle, which can be adjusted so as to suit any special demands, the intermediate distances between the reciprocal net points on the photography can also be varied. These features render the method useful for the comparison of intensities. For research work on fibres it may also be of some use.

A method for the determination of insulin potency using circular chromatography is described. The eluted spots are measured with respect to a standard which is run simultaneously with the unknown. The results of this determination do not differ significantly from those obtained by biological assay, at least for preparations with a potency higher than 19 I.U./mg on a moisture-free basis. For the determination of less pure samples the use of a standard insulin of corresponding purity is recommended. The precision of the method compares with that of a biological assay with 250 rabbits. Protamine and excess of zinc do not interfere with the determination.

Summary The diffuse streaks, appearing on a Laue photograph of tin, which have been previously discussed, are now considered in the light of the thermal theory of diffuse spots. The calculation, starting from the elastic constants of tin, shows a rather good agreement with the observed diffuse streaks. A small discrepancy may indicate that the assumed value for at least one of the constants is wrong.

A general theory of waves, irrespective of their physical properties, is expounded. Only non-absorbing media are considered. Next to the Snellius laws, which follow from the general aspects of waves, three principles are needed. From these the intensity of reflection may be found and the connection between scattering, the refractive index and the energy transport by the wave. The two formula's of Fresnel are closely connected with two kinds of scattering, the first one with isotropic scattering, the second formula with dipole scattering. Differential equations are not used. The general theory is applied to sound, light and X-rays and to electron waves.

1. In zwei Versuchen wurden einmal 200 und einmal 500 Brockmannsche Körperchen von Pleuronectiden homogenisiert und fraktioniert zentrifugiert. In den verschiedenen Fraktionen wurden Stickstoff, Zink, Insulin und beim zweiten Versuch Succino-Dehydrogenase quantitativ untersucht. Dabei konnte Insulin nur im zweiten Versuch in allen Fraktionen mit ausreichender Genauigkeit bestimmt werden. 2. Die Konzentrationen von Insulin und Succino-Dehydrogenase verhielten sich in den verschiedenen Fraktionen fast gleich. 63% des gesamten Insulins fanden sich im zweiten Versuch in einer Fraktion mit der weitaus höchsten Enzymaktivität. Es muß infolgedessen angenommen werden, daß der überwiegende Teil des Hormons in den Mitochondrien vorliegt oder an diese fixiert ist. Die Insulinkonzentration in der insulin-reichsten Fraktion, berechnet aus Stickstoffwerten, beträgt 4,7 Prozent. Sie ist aber unter Berücksichtigung der teilweisen Hormoninaktivierung und des Anteils an inselfremdem Gewebe wesentlich höher anzunehmen. 3. Die Zinkkonzentrationen verhalten sich innerhalb der verschiedenen Zellfraktionen abweichend von denen des Insulins. Die in der reinsten Mitochondrienfraktion vorliegende Zinkkonzentration von 1,3%, bezogen auf das darin enthaltene Insulin, genügt, um dieses eventuell unter Mitwirkung von bestimmten Proteinen in eine schlecht lösliche Depotform zu überführen. Das in dieser Fraktion beobachtete Verhältnis entspricht 1,2 Atomen Zink auf 1 Insulinmolekül der Größe 6000. Die höchsten Zinkkonzentrationen fanden sich in den Mikrosomen enthaltenden Fraktionen. Hier lag ein Überschuß von Zink unter Berücksichtigung der maximalen Bindungsfähigkeit des darin enthaltenen Insulins vor. 4. Die bei den beiden Versuchen beobachteten Unterschiede im Gesamtgehalt der Brockmannschen Körperchen an Insulin und Zink werden auf die unterschiedlichen Stoffwechselbedingungen der zu verschiedenen Jahreszeiten gefangenen Fische zurückgeführt. 5. Die Befunde werden im Zusammenhang mit früher besprochenen Vorgängen bei der blutzucker-gesteuerten Insulinabgabe diskutiert. Die Lokalisierung des Insulins in der Mitochondrienfraktion gibt einen neuen Einblick in die spezifische Funktion der Inselzellen. Die Abgabe von Insulin infolge einer spezifischen Steigerung des Inselzellstoffwechsels - deren Ursache wiederum ein vermehrtes Glucoseangebot aus dem Blut ist - ist besser zu verstehen.

Ik schreef toen een korte schets Sociologie van de volte, een betoog over mogelijke sociaal-psychologische en organisatorische gevolgen van toenemende bevolkingsdruk.
