The authors propose a colorimetric determination of phosphohexose isomerase, using the thiobarbituric acid reaction to estimate the fructose formed by the enzymatic reaction. Results are expressed in milliunits, and normal values discussed in reference to Bodansky's technique. This determination has particular interest in liver and neoplastic diseases.

A density-matrix approach to constrained eigenvalue problems is presented. It is shown that all of the linearly independent eigenvectors of an Hermitian matrix can be generated with the idempotency equations ($\mathit{P}$ equations) developed in previous papers of this series. In particular, the method is applied to variational calculations in ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}^{+}$ and He.

A general three-resonance dual vertex with one of the legs being a normal-parity spin-j particle (leading trajectory) is constructed assuming a local coupling with the current carried by the constituents, quarks, of a hadron. This leads to results similar to those obtained by factorization of theN-point dual amplitude. This vertex is used to study the total widths of resonances along the leading trajectory. We have carried out an explicit numerical computation of the first four widths. We cannot make yet any statement about the asymptotic behavior of the widths but our results are not in disagreement with experimental indications, namely they slowly decrease as a function ofM2 in the energy region considered.

A study of the feasibility of applying an experimental dictionary and a digital computer to proofreading led to investigation of the nature of conversion errors and development of computer programs for correction of unorthographic machine-readable text. The correction programs were tested with a sample of unproofread technical abstracts with a large number of possible errors. The error-correction program has three levels: the first level corrects commonly misspelled words through watching with a stored dictionary; the second level treats common misspelling patterns not readily amenable to direct dictionary correction. Error patterns most probably associated with human operation of transcription devices, or with limitations or malfunctions of conversion equipment, are dealt with by the third level. Beyond the first level, the program can apply nine error-correction procedures. The general structure and organization of the program is illustrated in Fig. 1 of the text. Because selections of alternative spellings are combinatorial, the correction algorithms must test several hundred candidates per error, on the average. Hence a study explored system design characteristics to increase the efficiency of correction procedures.

The integral absorption of the CO-stretching vibration has been estimated for several unbranched aldehydes, fattic acids and methylesters of fattic acids. By plotting the integral absorption against the Taft-constant of the alkyl groups, straight line were obtained. The slopes depend strongly on the nature of the second substituent. In the case of the esters it is shown that a single correlation exists between the integral absorption and the hydrolysis constant.

The system design and evaluation of an experimental system are presented. The ``Stenowriter'' utilizes a special-purpose translation computer, equipped with a large random-access memory, to provide real-time processing of spoken material into typewritten English. The input is provided by an operator using a special keyboard with which information may be stenographically encoded as rapidly as it is spoken. The stenographic code is automatically processed by the translation system into corresponding English with proper spelling and format. The output appears on an electric typewriter. Through multiplexing techniques, information for a large number of input-output units can be processed, each on a real-time basis, by one computer.

Certain algebraic aspects present in the dual resonance models led Susskind and Frye to the construction of $n$-point pion amplitudes in the tree-graph approximation which are a sum of terms, each one coming from a distinct permutation and satisfying the Adler's condition separately. It was also shown that this line of reasoning picks up a definite form of chiral symmetry breaking (in $\mathrm{SU}2\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\mathrm{SU}2$). In this work we show that the extension to the pseudoscalar multiplet forces one to include the whole nonet. The resulting amplitudes coincide with those obtained from an $U(3)\ensuremath{\bigotimes}U(3)$ model with the chiral symmetry broken in a way that preserves the complete nonet degeneracy.
