Immune tolerance is a phenomenon resulting from the interaction of antigen with cells of the immune mechanism under conditions that are far from being understood. The original assumption as formulated by Medawar [1] and Dresser [2] suggests that tolerance is the outcome of antigen interplay with immature target cells. With the accumulation of quantitative data it was later suggested that tolerance may result from the “overloading” of a small number of competent cells with a relatively large amount of antigen.
