This book is based on a conference held in August, 1962, just prior to the passage of the drug amendments of 1962 and the subsequent issuance of regulations relative to investigational drugs. As a result of the late appearance of this publication and the failure to revise the papers to reflect the current situation, seven (of the 26) chapters are to a large degree outdated. Unfortunately, these are the chapters addressed to the conference theme, "Evaluation." The other chapters, principally in basic scientific areas, are uneven in content and presentation but have survived the passage of time with smaller loss in value. Even this material could have been improved by more careful editing, as for example, the legends on many graphs. The principal value of this book is to serve as a record of the conference; participants and possibly others may find it an interesting historical record of drug-evaluation procedures
