The effect on the social and sexual behaviour of Boran × Sahiwal ( Bos indicus ) bulls of two post-weaning management systems employing one sex grouping is described. The systems differed essentially in having large and small group numbers, and in the utilization of unrestricted range or restricted paddock grazing. Libido of the bulls was significantly affected by management system.

The object of this study was to assess the importance of social interaction and dominance relationships in influencing egg production in battery cages. A light and a medium hybrid (Shaver 288 and Thornber 909) were housed as single birds, as pairs of the same strain or as mixed pairs. The light hybrid was more aggressive and was dominant to the medium hybrid although its mean body weight was 27% less. Contrary to an earlier report social dominance was not reflected in increased egg production nor subordination in reduced performance, perhaps because the generous space allocation meant there was no competition for food. Birds housed as pairs were significantly heavier than those housed in single cages by 30 weeks; the reason was considered to be social facilitation of feeding.

The use of pets in the therapeutic encounter brings a new dimension to child psychotherapy. A pet may be used as an aide by the clinician in his office and also introduced into the home situation.

This study of children's interests in topics of conversation is predicated on the thesis that the objectives of the curriculum should be conceived in the light of the attitudes, tastes, and activities characteristic of childhood. In the words of Bobbitt, often repeated in his class lectures, "The road we travel is our goal." That is to say, the experiences provided by the language-composition curriculum should be selected in the light of the prevalent interests and activities of the pupils. The curriculum should form an articulate part in a definite, unified, coherent program of school experiences designed increasingly to identify the child with the aims and activities derived from an analysis of social life as a whole. It is assumed that effective teaching is based on the psychological principle that learning is most functional and economical in a lifelike situation which to the learner seems vital and worth while. To ascertain the natural interests of young children is, therefore, an important step in the planning of the curriculum if effective and appealing oral and written expressional situations are to be attained.

112 returns were received in a survey of 150 (48% sample of children, 35% sample of institutions) children's training schools located in the United States inquiring as to the use of animals in farm programs and use of domestic animals as pets for children. 38 schools which had farm programs indicated that cows and hogs were the most popular farm animals. 46 schools which permitted their children to own pets stated that dogs and cats were the most popular pets. In most schools children and staff cooperated in caring for the pets. The school census was not related to the ownership of pets. The questionnaire elicited many volunteered comments regarding pet ownership in the training schools.

The hypothesis that dysfunctioning or decrease in sexuality among the aged might be related to increased suicide is discussed in relation to Farber's theory of suicide. Recommendations include: (1) Communicating to the aged person that he is an attractive human being able to generate affectional relationships in others; (2) the therapeutic uses of play, recreation, and sport as a method of improving physical fitness, social interaction, and body image; (3) encouragement of all degrees of human relationships among the aged, between the aged and other groups, and between the aged and pets of one type or another; (4) the need for the hypothesis to be tested; (5) the need for hospital staff and administrators, and medical and nursing schools to recognize the therapeutic aspects of a healthy and functioning sexuality; and (6) consideration of the status of sexual functioning as part of any medical workup. Sexual therapy, when appropriate and desirable, should be part of the total therapeutic approach. Where indicated clinical prostitution, concubinage, and pornography were suggested as having value when utilized as part of the total rehabilitative, therapeutic program.

It is possible that we will never know exactly when man's best friend, the dog, attached himself to the human race. However, we do know that the dog was already a part of the family life of the cave-man, in Europe, more than 12,000 years ago.
