Kaolinites, catalytically active for the polymerization of styrene, can be deactivated by treatment with 1N aqueous sodium chloride. Subsequent washing of the sodium kaolinite results in a facile hydrolysis yielding an active hydronium/aluminum kaolinite in which the exchangeable cations act as surface Br0onsted acid initiation sites. Uninducible galactose nonfermenter mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiaehave been isolated and mapped in the gal ilocus. They appear to be analogous to the ismutations found in the regulatory genes of the Escherichia colilactose and galactose systems. The susceptibility to suppression by an ochre suppressor of an iallele in an isi−double mutant suggests that the ilocus in S. cerevisiaecodes for a protein.
