Nigrospora oryzae is reported to be partially deficient for biotin. The external requirement for the vitamin is shown to be conditioned by the nitrogen source. The deficiency for biotin is apparent when urea or nitrate is used to supply the nitrogen. The organism is found to be more dependent on an external supply of biotin in media where autoclaved urea is the source of nitrogen than where nitrate or sterilefiltered urea is that source.

Pseudoarachniotus hyalinosporus strains A and B and P. roseus were cultured on a standard basal medium containing NaNO 3 either as the sole nitrogen source, or in combination with one of the following, ammonium tartrate, peptone and beef extract. All three strains were shown to contain the terpenoids squalene, ubiquinone, an ester of ergosterol and free ergosterol. In each case the ubiquinone was identified as the −35 homologue (UQ 7 ). Although the media had little effect on the growth (dry weight) of the various fungi, the highest yields (mg/g dry weight) of ubiquinone and ergosterol were generally obtained on the media having the more complex nitrogen sources.

Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission has initiated the processing of human tissue for utilization in reconstructive surgery as allograft in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Tissue donation and grafting has comprehensive and versatile role in the health care sector. IAEA programmes to develop a series of tissue banks throughout South East Asia by having great significance for improving basic health care in other developing countries. Utilization of human tissues has been practicing in many countries and it has a long history. Bangladesh is somewhat new in the field of tissue banking activities to treat degenerative bone diseases, congenital deformities, bone fractures, gap non-union from traumatic accidents, dental defects, different type of burns, acid violence, leprotic ulcer, bedsore, traumatic open wound, diabetic wound etc. Several hospitals and clinics throughout the country are currently involved in tissue procurement and grafting though some of intricate ethical problems (ideological, cultural, psychological, and religious) and conflicts stay behind this field. For ethical and legal concern, the healthcare personnel have been working under the law of “Human Organ / Tissue Donation and Transplantation Act”, as the National Parliament of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh has approved the declaration on 13th April-1999 requiring consent from the donor or next of kins. Before considering the legal and ethical questions associated with tissue banks, several functions must be identified and followed: improvement of the patient care, elimination of the trauma and morbidity associated with secondary surgical procedures, reduction of the prolonged hospital stays and medical costs etc. Although ethics, moral principles, and legal aspects are practicing within some degree of people, it should disseminate enormously to the general public of the country as they could be more aware and interested to tissue donation thereby more people will contribute to alleviate sufferings and more lives will save. Carbon nutrition of Chaetomium sp., Myrothecium verrucaria, Pestalotia gracilis, and Pleurotus ostreatus was studied. Nitrogen nutrition was also examined with Nigrospora oryzae included. The effect of C/N ratio on fruiting was measured for the first four fungi. Several carbon sources including alcohols, carbohydrates, and organic acids were tested; in general, dextrin and L-arabinose were the most favorable for growth, starch was less so, whereas sodium acetate and sodium citrate were the least favorable. Maltose supported good sporulation of M. verrucaria, P. gracilis, and P. ostreatus. Organic nitrogen was superior to inorganic nitrogen for growth of M. verrucaria, N. oryzae, and P. ostreatus. The opposite was noticed for Chaetomium sp. and P. gracilis. Not all could grow on sodium nitrite at the concentration used nor sporulate on DL-methionine or ammonium sulfate. The best sporulation of P. gracilis was obtained with the maximum glucose and nitrate concentrations used (4% and 1% respectively), whereas the minimum concentrations (0.1 and 0.05% respectively) were best for the sporulation of P. ostreatus. Chaetomium sp. and M. verrucaria fruited best on intermediate concentrations of glucose and nitrate.

A 10-year-old Lebanese boy developed systemic lupus erythematosus 3 months after the administration of ethosuccimide (Zarontin), 500 to 750 mg. per day. Prednisone, 60 mg. per day, was administered orally for-6 months. The child's clinical manifestations (fever, general well-being, rash, lymphadenopathy, hepatic and splenic enlargement) disappeared within 3 weeks, and the lupus erythematosus preparation became negative within 3 months after the discontinuation of the drug. Seventeen months after cessation of ethosuccimide therapy, and 11 months after discontinuing administration of prednisone, the child remains in good health and has no clinical or laboratory evidence of activity of disease.

The oidia of Pleurotus ostreatus were shown to contain the terpenoids squalene, ergosterol [free and esterified] and ubiquinone [UQ 7 ]. The major neutral lipid, which constituted 29% of the dry weight, was found to be triglyceride in nature, the major fatty acid being oleic acid with lesser amounts of palmitic and linoleic.

Diese im Gegensatz zu früher2) als 4R-2 formulierte Konfiguration ist vereinbar mit der Hudsonschen Lactonregel, dem 1H-NMR-spektrum (Nuclear-Overhauser-Effect) und der PFT-13C-NMR-Analyse. Da schon früher das entsprechende γ,δ-Dihydroxyisoleucin des α-und β-Amanitins ohne Berührung von C-4 in 6 übergeführt werden konnte, muß jetzt auch die Strukturformel dieser Aminosäure zu (2S,3R,4R)-2-Amino-3-methyl-1-4,5-dihydroxyvaleriansäure (8) abgewandelt werden.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the feasibility of using Arabic Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to assess depression and anxiety among patients attending accident and emergency (A & E) at a University Hospital setting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS In this prospective observational study translated questionnaire of HADS was used for patients aged 18 years or above who presented to A & E at King Khalid University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study included 257 patients as per an agreed inclusion criteria. The study quantified depression and anxiety and its association with demographic and or illness related variables using SPSS. RESULTS Out of 257 participants, the dominant age group, ranged between 18-30 years (40.9%) with female participants (55.3%) outweigh the male among all. The overall occurrence of depression was 27.2% (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 21.8 % to 32.6%) and anxiety was 23% (17.8% to 28.2%CI). The response of the fungi investigated to duration of exposure to light varies with the variation in the light intensity employed. Using relatively low intensity light (160 and/or 300 foot candles/inch2), the growth ofMyrothecium verrucaria &Pestalotia gracilis was not affected by the increase in the time of light exposure, while that ofPleurotus ostreatus was checked. Fruiting under the same conditions was hastened on exposure to light. Under higher light intensity (950 foot candles/inch2), growth ofMyrothecium was not affected, while that ofPestalotia andPleurotus decreased as the daily period of exposure to light increased.
