The high energy disturbance in the South Pacific on 24 August 1968 generated long-period (10–15 min), high-velocity (600 m sec−1) atmospheric pressure waves observed on a large aperture (250 km) micro-barograph array. A vertical incidence ionospheric Doppler sounder (4.8 MHz), located at the center of the array, detected an ionospheric oscillation (at a height of ∼225 km) in high correlation with the ground-level pressure signal. Correlated ionospheric Doppler-shift and ground-level pressure signals were observed for both the short and long great-circle paths from the test site. The Doppler sounder signal is the result of vertical changes of the ionosphere accompanying the passage of the atmospheric wave which has been identified by Tolstoy and Herron as a surface gravity wave.

SummaryRadioactive mucopolysaccharides were isolated from HeLa, L, mouse embryo, and rat embryo cells grown in culture medium in the presence of radioactive inorganic sulfate, for 72 hr. The isolated mucopolysaccharides were submitted to mild acid hydrolysis as well as to the action of several mucopolysaccharidases and the degradation products were characterized by their migration in several chromatographic systems and on electrophoresis. It was demonstrated that part of these mucopolysaccharides are chondroitin sulfate A C and part N-sulfated-heparin-like compounds susceptible to hydrolysis by heparinases releasing glucosamine 2. 6-disulfate as the major amino sugar residue.

ABS>An examination of diurnal and seasonal variation of the occurrences of three different types of sporadic ionization E, namely, equatorial, low, and flat types, at the South American transequatorial chain of stations is discussed. Lunar influences and some correlation with geomagnetic disturbances on the occurrences are also discussed. The Huancayo ionograms are examined in some detail to study closely the equatorial E/sub s/, particularly its sudden disappearances. The Huancayo magnetograms are also examined to associate some of the observed characteristics of E/sub s/ with certain distinctive features of the magnetograms. (auth)

Power spectra of CW phase-path sounders operating at 6.0, 4.8 and 2.4 MHz often display peak or slope changes at periods in the 5–20-min range. Plots of these periods vs. real height tend to follow mean Vaisala frequency curves calculated from Standard Atmosphere models. This suggests that statistical properties of CW phase-path sounder fluctuation can be used to monitor certain mean physical parameters of the upper atmosphere.

This paper presents a non standard analysis of systematic nonstationarity in data on ionospheric motions. The methodology is applicable to any analysis of ambient back-ground noise in communication systems which use the atmosphere as a medium. The data used in this paper were obtained from an array of radar-like devices called phase-path sounders, which measure the velocity of the vertical motion of the neutral gases in the ionosphere. The model fits between 36% and 5%, of the variation of the log spectrum for frequencies less than 3 CPH and greater than 6 CPH using a period of 24 hours (diurnal) and the first harmonic of 12 hours (semidiurnal).

A technique for dispersion of animal tissue cells is described. The proposed technique is based on the concomitant use of trypsin and disodium ethylenediamine tetraacetate (EDTA). The use of the two dispersing agents (trypsin and disodium EDTA) markedly enhances cell yield as compared with the standard cell dispersion methods. Moreover, significant reduction in the amount of time required for complete tissue dispersal, presence of a very low number of nonviable cells, less cell clumping, and more uniform monolayer formation upon cultivation compare favorably with the results usually obtained with the standard trypsinization technique.

SummaryThe incorporation and fate of heparin in L, LE, Hela, and mouse embryo tissue culture cells was studied. The results were as follows: (a) heparin at the concentrations used had a stimulatory effect of about 15% in the cell growth; (b) incorporation of heparin in L, LE, and Hela cells was in the order of 1 μg of heparin/million cells and in the mouse embryo cells in the order of 12–20 μg/million cells; (c) analysis by chromatography and electrophoresis of radioactive material incorporated or released after incubation with heparin of the four cell lines revealed that no degradation of the compound occurred; (d) microscopic observations indicated that heparin is deposited in the cells in the form of granules; (e) the incorporation of heparin by the cells was increased by puromycin and actinomycin and was not affected by mitomycin. A possible mechanism by which heparin penetrates and is excreted by the cells is discussed.
