Emission from the exhaust plume of a 30 cm mercury ion thruster was measured from 160 to 600 nm as a function of axial and radial distance from the thruster discharge chamber. The spectrally dispersed absolute intensities were used to construct an empirical volume rate function. The function was integrated along a typical instrument field of view, and the resulting apparent brightness was compared with instrument sensitivities to evaluate the extent of optical interference. Most of the emitted radiation came from UV lines of excited mercury atoms and ions, with no observable continuum emission. The intensity levels degraded rapidly with distance from the thruster so that optical interference was negligible for fields of view not intercepting the beam axis. The operation of only one instrument, a zodiacal photopolarimeter, was considered incompatible with simultaneous thruster operation.

Echocardiographic studies were performed preflight 5 days before launch and on recovery day and 1, 2, 4, 11, 31 and 68 days postflight. From these echocardiograms measurements were made. From these primary measurements, left ventricular end-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume, stroke volume, and mass were derived using the accepted assumptions. Findings in the Scientist Pilot and Pilot resemble those seen in trained distance runners. Wall thickness measurements were normal in all three crewmembers preflight. Postflight basal studies were unchanged in the Commander on recovery day through 68 days postflight in both the Scientist Pilot and Pilot, however, the left ventricular end-diastolic volume, stroke volume, and mass were decreased slightly. Left ventricular function curves were constructed for the Commander and Pilot by plotting stroke volume versus end-diastolic volume. In both astronauts, preflight and postflight data fell on the same straight line demonstrating that no deterioration in cardiac function had occurred. These data indicate that the cardiovascular system adapts well to prolonged weightlessness and suggest that alterations in cardiac dimensions and function are unlikely to limit man's future in space.

High-resolution radar data, taken from over the 1500-km circular area that was at the center of the planetary disk on June 20, 1972, show that this part of Venus is nearly flat and cratered. The largest crater is 160 km across, but only about 500 m deep. The smallest craters that can be resolved are about 35 km across.

Film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer are measured downstream of injection through discrete holes into a turbulent mainstream boundary layer. Air is injected through both a single hole and a row of holes spaced at three-diameter intervals and inclined at an angle of 35 deg to the main flow. There is little difference between the heat transfer coefficient with blowing and without blowing at low blowing rates (mass flux ratios). In fact, at low blowing rates, injection is found to decrease somewhat the heat transfer coefficient from that measured without blowing. As the mass flux ratio increases past unity, the heat transfer coefficient increases, especially with injection through a row of holes. The peak heat transfer is usually found at the edge of the spreading jets (i.e., between two holes). At a blowing rate near two, the lateral average of the heat transfer is as much as 27 percent higher than the heat transfer with no blowing. The increase in heat transfer is attributed to the interaction between the jets and the free stream, causing high levels of turbulence.

A high-resolution study of the surface of Mercury with a 2.388 GHz radar reveals the existence of hills and valleys with heights (depths) of about 1 km. There is also evidence supporting the existence of craters with diameters of about 50 km and depths of about 700 m.

Pure monochromatic waves of a wavelength of 12.5 cm were beamed toward the planet. The echoes were no longer monochromatic because of the Doppler effect of the planet's rotation. A Fourier power spectrum was produced from the echo signals. On the surface of Mercury, the contours of constant Doppler shift are circles, concentric about a point on the limb near the equator.

The temperature distribution downstream of a heated jet entering an isothermal crossflow at an angle of 90 deg is predicted using two conduction models with energy sources above the point of injection, in one case a point source and in the second a line source. The models use effective turbulent diffusivities that are determined empirically from previous measurements. Temperatures predicted by the models are compared to experimental results.
