The reaction of dialkyldichlorosilanes with amide oximes leads to cyclic products whose monomeric form has an l-oxa-3,5-diaza-2-silacyclopent-4-ene structure. These compounds exist mostly in adimeric form, occasionally monomeric or trimeric. Their infrared spectra have been interpreted. The secondary amino group of the compounds has been trisilylated.

Nineteen cases of the rarer connective tissue disorders diagnosed between 1948 and 1972 have been reviewed. Of these 6 were of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 3 of dermatomyositis and 5 each of progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) and polyarteritis nodosa (PAN).Of the 6 cases of SLE, 4 were of true SLE, one of ethosuximide induced lupus syndrome and one newborn with placental transfer of lupus erythematosus factor. Three cases of true SLE died of renal failure.None of the patients with dermatomyositis or PSS died. Of the 5 cases of PAN, 2 died and one could not be traced. The disease is quiescent in the other two.

Total Nhas been measured in a number of meteorites by neutron activation analysis using the reaction N14(n, p)C14. From each meteorite a number of chips have been analysed to investigate the variation of N contents in a sample. Many meteorites are found to contain a heterogeneous distribution of N. Eighteen chondrites, mostly of the classes C3, H4, H5, L4, L5, L6 and LL6, and six achondrites are found to have average N contents of 10–45 ppm. These do not show any clear-cut dependence of N on petrological group. However, the inherent heterogeneity or the fact that from most meteorite classes only single falls were studied might be responsible for this lack of correlation. In Cold Bokkeveld (C2) N is high (420 ppm). Unlike C, N content of ureilites is low (26 ppm). Nitrogen is enriched in the non-magnetic as compared to the magnetic fractions in H-group chondrites. Analyses of sieved Bjurböle phases show no enrichment of N in finer matrix material, nor any depletion in chondrules. In two gas-rich meteorites, Kapoeta and Assam, there is no excess N in the dark phases. Nine iron meteorites and three mesosiderites were analysed. Twenty analyses of Canyon Diablo and seven of Odessa establish a very heterogeneous N distribution in these meteorites.

Primary mediastinal choriocarcinoma is a rare entity and is peculiar only to man. Although rigid criteria such as serial biopsies of the gonads are essential to rule out the possibility of such mediastinal tumor as a metastatic lesion, a review of the literature shows that anterior mediastinum is rarely involved by the metastasis from gonadal tumors. The clinical diagnosis of such a tumor can be made by the presence of the triad of chest pain, cough and gynecomastia in a man in the third decade. The prognosis of such a lesion is uniformly hopeless irrespective of the mode of treatment. A case of primary mediastinal choriocarcinoma in a 22-year-old man has been described. This case brings the total number of cases to 16.

The infrared spectra of [Ru(NH3)5(CH3)2SO]X2, [Ru(ND3)5(CH3)2SO]X2, [Ru(NH3)5(CD3)2SO]X2, and [Ru(ND3)5(CD3)2SO]X2where X = PF6−have been examined in detail between 4000–200 cm−1. These data, together with the 1H n.m.r. spectrum of [Ru(NH3)5(CH3)2SO](PF6)2in D2O, suggest that dimethyl sulfoxide is bonded to ruthenium viathe sulfur atom in spite of the fact that the νsofrequency is not very different from that observed for uncoordinated dimethyl sulfoxide.

Triphenylbismuth carbonate, oxalate, sulfate, selenate, and chromate have been prepared and their solid state infrared (i.r.) spectra have been studied in the frequency region 4000 to 200 cm−1. The i.r. spectroscopic results indicate that, like the corresponding trimethyl- and triphenylantimony(V) derivatives, these compounds also have non-ionic polymeric structures containing bridging anion groups and five co-ordinate bismuth. The i.r. frequencies associated with the bismuth–anion stretching vibrations appear to occur at 300 cm−1for the carbonate and below 300 cm−1for the other compounds.

Organoantimony compounds of the type R3SbX and (R3Sb)2OX, where R is methyl or phenyl, and X is a bivalent anionic group such as SeO4, CrO4, or C2O4, have been prepared. Structural characteristics of these compounds have been determined by studying their infrared spectra in the solid state between 4000 and 250 cm−1. The spectral results indicate that in both types of compounds the anion X is coordinated to the R3Sb or (R3Sb—O—SbR3) group resulting in non-ionic, five coordinate, polymeric structures.

The effect of Lippes loop on biochemical composition of the uterine fluid has been investigated in healthy parous women of reproductive age. The most interesting finding is a marked increase in total protein and nonprotein nitrogen levels of the fluid. The bulk of such excess protein seems to be the waste product of lysis of cells, infiltrated polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and cast-off epithelium, and as suck biologically inactive. It is suggested that an IUD makes the uterine fluid milieu metabolically inert and unfavorable for growth and survival of the preimplantation blastocyst.

The vibrational mean amplitudes for bonded as well as for nonbonded distances have been evaluated for AsP3, SbP3, and PAs3 at temperatures : T = 0oK, T = 298.15oK and T=500 oK using recent vibrational data. The results have been briefly discussed.

A previous study indicated that the oxidative assimilation capacity of a heterogeneous microbial population for acetic acid did not return to the initial value after a period of endogenous respiration in the presence of ammonium sulfate. In view of this finding it was not possible to recommend fully the use of a continuous oxidative assimilation process for the treatment of nitrogen-deficient waste waters of noncarbohydrate nature. To put the process to a severe test, a laboratory-scale pilot plant study was done. Acetate (1,000 mg/liter) was fed continuously to a completely mixed, aerated reactor vessel, from which the mixed liquor was channeled to a settling basin. The settling basin supernatant fluid was continuously discharged, and a portion of the settled biological sludge was subjected to endogenous respiration in the presence of ammonium sulfate and was recycled to the aeration vessel. Experiments were conducted at three levels of ammonia nitrogen in the endogenous phase. Approximately 90% removal of the carbon source (expressed as chemical oxygen demand, COD) was attained with a low level of supplemental nitrogen (COD/N = 70:1) and a fairly low reactor detention time (4 hr). Based upon these and previous results, it has been concluded that the process shows promise for application to the treatment of a wide variety of nitrogen-deficient industrial wastes.
