Abstract

This is a report of an investigation into the spatial distribution of food consumption and dietary patterns throughout the World. The attempt to classify them in a scheme which will facilitate ordering the available information and provide a basis for a satisfactory explanation of the spatial variation. A classification is suggested which takes into account both the adequacy and nutritional variety of the staple items of diet in different areas and at the same tune identifies some of the specific foods eaten. Data were compiled from primary and secondary sources, and an overview of foods consumed over the entire world was obtained on a macroscopic scale. A scheme was next devised which was based on two elements: 1) major sources of calories derived from protein, for example, meats and legumes, and 2) other major sources of calories such as food grains and fats. Twenty classes were delineated and their spatial distribution was depicted on a world map. The major foods and the location of each class are described.
