The last phase of this three-phase study involved an off-campus inservice education class for home economics teachers and a summer workshop. The class was conducted in four locations within the state, and enrolled 58 persons including county home economics supervisors, vocational supervisors, and home economics teachers. Course requirements were made relevant to the individual participant and to his work setting. The major product of the summer workshop was five curriculum guides: (1) Child Care Services, (2) Clothing and Textile Services, (3) Institutional Food Services, (4) Homemaker Services, and (5) Orientation to the World of Work. The guides are not included in this report; however, copies are available through the State Department of Education. A course outline for the off-campus class, questionnaires, and other supplementary materials are appended. Phases I and II are available as VT 002 431 and VT 010 022, respectively. (CH)

Phase II of this three-phase study was a seminar held to inform teachers of information obtained in Phase I, a survey of 483 Florida businesses. During the course of the seminar 59 home economics teachers and supervisors participated in 3 weeks of intensive in-service education. Pre- and post-tests were made of participants' knowledge, attitudes, and involvement in occupational home economics. The texts of 22 presentations made by the seminar faculty and questionnaires used in the seminar are appended. Phases I and III are available as VT 002 431 and VT 010 023, respectively. (CH)

The first phase of this three-phase study focused on identifying occupations (job titles), projecting employment and employment opportunities, determining employment qualifications, and identifying clusters of technical occupations and attendant competencies. Data were obtained from 814 questionnaires completed during 483 interviews conducted with business and industry personnel: 34 for child care, 113 for foods, 161 for clothing and textiles, and 175 for housing and home furnishings. The interviews yielded employment qualifications and opportunities for 69 specific job titles. Employment data included 5,347 full-time and 2,143 part-time employees. Increased employment was anticipated in approximately 50 percent of the job titles. Clusters of job titles requiring common competencies are presented in chart form. A bibliography, questionnaires, and an interview guide are appended. Phases II and III are available as VT 010 022 and VT 010 023, respectively. (CH)

This article describes two components of "Project: Child-Family Educators", a community-based child development training program designed for community paraprofessionals, a preschool play group experience for children in the community, and a parent education program. (CS)

This report describes 3 patients with Hodgkin’s disease who developed idiopathic cholestasis. Four patients have previously been described in the literature. Although idiopathic cholestasis is usually associated with advanced lymphomas, 2 of our patients had cholestatic jaundice during early (stages I and IIA) Hodgkin’s disease, and their jaundice improved during localized radiotherapy. Hodgkin’s disease should be added to the differential diagnosis of patients with unexplained cholestatic jaundice.

In liquid ionography the x‐ray photons are absorbed in a liquid containing a high‐atomic‐number atom, such as tetra‐methyl‐tin. The liquid is contained between two parallel electrodes separated by a few millimeters. Most of the ions produced in the liquid recombine. Those that escape recombination are collected on an insulating foil covering one of the electrodes. The resulting charge pattern is rendered visible using powder‐cloud development. For a 4‐mm electrode separation and using 45‐kVp x rays, about 98% of the radiation is absorbed; for 105‐kVp x rays, about 88% of the radiation is absorbed. We studied the sensitivity of a 4‐mm chamber as a function of the applied electric field and found that, for 65‐kVp x rays and an electric field of 70 kV/cm, the sensitivity is 1 nC/cm2‐mR. We present an image of a test pattern with a resolution of better than 10 1p/mm produced by this system.

Pregnancy is usually portrayed as a wonderful time of joy and anticipation, yet it has been well established that all women experience an increase in anxiety during pregnancy. What causes this maternal anxiety? A questionnaire was administered to 202 randomly selected maternity patients during their hospital confinement following childbirth in three hospitals in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, and Fargo, North Dakota. The purpose of the study was (1) to determine specific categories of concern in pregnant women and (2) to identify relationships between these concerns and (a) the number of pregnancies a woman has had and (b) her level of education. Over half of the subjects expressed concern in the categories of baby, childbirth, subsequent pregnancies, and self. Highly significant differences were found to exist between primiparas and multiparas and among women of various educational levels.

Sum rules applicable to the photoproduction of $\ensuremath{\pi}$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}$ mesons on nucleons are written down using the commutation relation for electromagnetic current density with the field of the proton. These rules relate scattering channels obtained by interchanging a boson with a fermion line, e.g., $\ensuremath{\gamma}+N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}+N$ and $N+\overline{N}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}+\ensuremath{\pi}$ channels. When saturated with nucleon, ${N}^{*}$, ${S}_{11}$, and vector-meson poles, these rules relate photonic vertices of the vector meson to the vertices of fermions. Such relations between all boson vertices and fermion vertices are consequences of the boson-fermion commutation relations. The estimate for $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coupling is in agreement with the values obtained from the partial decay width for $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\gamma}$. The estimate for $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coupling leads via the $\ensuremath{\rho}$-dominance model to a value of total decay width for the $\ensuremath{\eta}$ meson in agreement with other such estimates.

SummaryIn the isolated rat liver perfusion system, with a blood flow of 25-30 ml / minute, the biological half-life of crystalline pork insulin was determined to be 14 minutes and pork nonsuppressible insulin-like activity (NSILA) 63 minutes. The prolonged half-life of NSILA is consistent with the apparent lack of change in serum concentration in clinical situations and under physiologic experimentation.

The diagnosis of elongated styloid process is difficult to establish unless the clinician develops a high degree of suspicion with regard to this entity. Palpation should be a matter of routine. Without these practices, the patient may be destined to visit many specialists and may be unfairly designated a neurotic.

Downy brome (Bromus tectorumL.) seedling emergence was greatest from soil depths of 1 inch or less, but occasionally seedlings emerged from depths of 4 inches. Downy brome seed covered by soil germinated more rapidly than those seed on the soil surface. More downy brome seedlings emerged, and from greater depths, from coarse-textured soils than fine-textured soils when moisture was not limiting. Soil type did not influence longevity of downy brome seed buried in the soil. Most (98%) 8-month-old downy brome seed buried 8 inches in the soil germinated but did not emerge in 1 year; and none remained viable in the soil after 5 years. The moldboard plow was more effective in reducing downy brome populations than a sweep plow or one-way disk in a continuous winter wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) cropping system.
