The article focuses on the methods used by botanists and foresters to prevent the loss of trees in the U.S. Curtis May, researcher at the Division of Forest Pathology, used natural regeneration to restore forest affected by fire. After an investigation, forest pathologist James M. Walter sterilized the tools used in pruning and shoe soles with alcohol to prevent the spread of infection among trees. Albert J. Riker, plant pathology professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, planted rust-carrying ribes bushes in between pine rows to save the tree.
