Mixed gas reactors, even when special pains have been taken to ensure good mixing, often depart quite noticeably from the ideal of instantaneous mixing on the micro-scale. The present paper offers a quantitative measure of the extent of this departure, and shows how it is related to the reactor performance. The intensity of the mixing is characterized by a single parameter that measures the time scale of decay of nonuniformities in composition in the reactor. This is related to the design parameters of a gas reactor by dimensional arguments drawn from the theory of isotropic turbulence. The analysis of reactor performance is carried out in terms of a coalescence model for the micro-mixing that incorporates this time scale. The mixing model is borrowed from chemical engineering studies. Calculations are presented for adiabatic reaction systems, showing the shift in the effective reaction-rate curve, and especially the reduction in blow-out limit, with decreasing mixing intensity. Such calculations permit one to see how high a mixing intensity is needed to approximate perfect mixing, and how this level depends on the reaction kineties.

The perceptions of health managers about intersectoriality: integrating health and education in the context of dengue

Este trabalho é um ensaio cuja intenção é analisar a atuação das elites brasileiras no cenário nacional através de um estudo da evolução da sociedade. O homem surge na terra enfrentando adversidades das mais variadas, que o conduzem num processo natural e necessário a aglutinar e viver em grupos. Sua evolução através dos tempos numa existência lenta o leva a compreender as explicações tornavam-se acessivas à compreensão. O marco que acelerou as transformações do mundo foi, sem dúvida, a Revolução Industrial, que promoveu um avanço tecnológico de tal proporção que, hoje, o homem assiste aos acontecimentos surpreso e, por vezes, sem compreendê-los. Neste turbilhão de transformações e mudanças também está o brasileiro, participante e vivenciando, um tanto atordoado, preso às suas origens étnicas e condicionadas pelo ambiente onde vive com suas tradições e costumes legados por seus antepassados. O brasileiro possui basicamente características comuns aos demais habitantes do planeta, em função de uma série de determinantes, desenvolveu um jeito próprio que, realmente, o faz um ser especial e diferente dos demais, cujo conjunto de atitudes, posturas e modos compõem o caráter nacional. As elites são compostas por pessoas com estes traços característicos. As elites são representantes do povo que cada vez mais assumem os traços acentuados desse povo. Portanto, não podemos esperar que nossas elites sejam diferentes do povo, mas esperar que sejam iluminadas o suficiente para saber bem conduzir os destinos da coletividade, proporcionando e garantindo a ordem social. Os Partidos Políticos, os Sindicatos, a Igreja, os Empresários, as Forças Armadas, a Mídia, muito mais do que grupos de pressão, atualmente, são os grandes centros de poder, e seus representantes que compõem as elites poderão aumentar a instabilidade social reinante no país ou reverter a situação calamitosa para rumos mais estáveis e promissores, bastando, tão somente, procurar efetivar o bem comum. Dentro desta ótica já passa da hora e da vez para que as elites, imbuídas de um espírito de nacionalidade, reúnam esforços visando ao bem comum para toda a sociedade brasileira. E através de um entendimento amplo, objetivo, inteligente, compreensivo e simples encontrem mecanismos eficientes e duradouros, pois só assim surgirá um Projeto Nacional Brasileiro com o retorno de seus valores básicos e vitais tão esquecidos e agredidos.

A visita de Mário de Andrade a Alphonsus de Guimaraens, ocorrida no dia 10 de julho de 1919, foi o marco inicial para a difusão nacional da obra de Guimaraens, embora, naquela época, Mário tivesse apenas 25 anos e não fosse uma figura conhecida. Tal visita foi explorada no artigo “Alphonsus”, de autoria do próprio visitante na revista A Cigarra, de 18 de julho de 1919. Os ecos desse encontro figuram no poema “A visita”, de Carlos Drummond de Andrade. Manuel Bandeira também contribuiu consideravelmente, por juntamente com João Alphonsus organizar a edição das poesias completas do poeta mineiro, a partir de 1935. Doravante é que o seu prestígio de grande poeta começa realmente a consolidar-se. Neste artigo proponho analisar como se deu o processo de reverberação da obra de Alphonsus de Guimaraens por meio dos modernistas, sobretudo nas vozes de Mário de Andrade e Carlos Drummond de Andrade.

Summary Electromechanical inhibition of a demand pacemaker is reported due to the contact of two perforated right ventricular endocardial pacemaker electrodes. Electrode contact occurring during ventricular systole was verified at surgery. In vitro suppression of the demand function of a powerpack was accomplished by intermittently tapping two electrodes and generating an effective electrical signal.

Several forms of neuronal and glial cytoplasmic bodies have been observed with the electron microscope in cerebral biopsies from patients with juvenile amaurotic idiocy. In this study, another cytoplasmic inclusion, with contents resembling fingerprint markings, 8 has been found in neurons and astrocytes in 4 cases of juvenile amaurotic idiocy. These studie suggest that juvenile amaurotic idiocy is the manifestation of several distinct cellular disorders.

A method is derived for the design of stirred tank reactors for homogeneous reactions. A simple mixing model proposed previously by Curl (4) is used to compute the effects of finite mixing time on complex chemical reactions. It is also shown how the parameters of the model can be obtained by tracer experiments, or estimated theoretically by the assumption of isotropic turbulence. It is shown that in many practical cases the assumption of ideal mixing is a good approximation. However, the effects of imperfect mixing are more likely to be felt in a large reactor than in a pilot plant. Some quantitative examples are discussed. Methods are derived to compute the average outlet concentration for complex systems such as autothermic reactions, polymerization, crystallization, etc.

Extensive demyelination, and unusual cytosomes, the "zebra" bodies, were noted in Schwann cells and axons in a patient with neuropathy, cerebellar signs and atypical retinitis pigmentosa. Mitochondrial inclusion bodies were found in liver and skeletal muscle. It is suggested that this syndrome reflects a metabolic defect in myelination or myelin turnover, or perhaps an even more extensive abnormality in the synthesis and/or maintenance of certain membranes. The ultrastructural findings appear to be distinct from those in gargoylism, in which "zebra" bodies were first observed, and also from Refsum's syndrome.

The variability of textural and compaction properties of coarse grained materials of fluvial origin employed in the construction of 8 earth dams in Italy are discussed on the basis of the results of placement control tests. The shear strength of these materials is investigated by means of a broad laboratory investigation; a correlation between friction angle and the porosity is established. The influence of the variability of materials properties on the stability of an earth dam is analyzed by means of a probabilistic approach.

Electroencephalographic changes occur after small unilateral lesions have been made in the pontine tegmentum of cats with permanently implanted electrodes. Lesions in the area of the nucleus reticularis pontis oralis produce electroencephalographic synchronization (sleep pattern). Lesions in the pontine and caudal midbrain tegmentum, dorsal, lateral, and caudal to the lesions producing synchronization, produced electroencephalographic activation (waking pattern).

SUMMARY. The effect of surface-active agents on the permeability, survival, and pseudopod formation of the rhizopod, Pelomyxa carolinensis, was studied. Surfactants increased the rate of uptake of Na22 in almost all instances. Tweens which lower surface tension, stimulated or caused pseudopod formation; Tween 80 was the least toxic. The fatty acid component as well as the hydrophile-lipophile balance of the surfactant may influence the rate.

The data of 26 patients with obstructive jaundice caused by biliary tract stones were compared to those of patients with malignant obstructive jaundice in order to evaluate the diagnostic effectiveness of some laboratory tests in the differential diagnosis between these two conditions. The Fisher's discriminant analysis was employed. The combined evaluation of serum albumin and haptoglobin appeared to have the most satisfactory discriminative effectiveness, yielding a 54% rate of correct diagnosis, with a safety margin of 95%.

When dealing with some of primary prevention of alcoholism, the starting point is always a preliminary descriptive study of valueattitude systems of community groups, being one of the main prevention goals to modify certain guidelines and patterns of alcohol intake. This research aims at: a) Description of attitudes towards alcohol of 116 adolescents between 12 and 16 years in Córdoba City, belonging to middle class, white collar and qualified blue collar; b) Definition of relationships between adolescents' attitudes and social class; c) Determination, according to the social class, of favorable, unfavorable or neutral attitudes towards a program of prevention and control of alcoholism. A questionnaire with 49 uncomplete phrases first conceived for Chile and adapted to our milieu was used. General results show that middle class and nonqualified working class groups are the ones who most disapprove of and condemn alcohol abuse and, at the same time, avoid to a higher degree drinking alcohol. When alcohol intake in women is considered, the percentage is even higher. Groups belonging to middle classes think alcohol abuse is the result of sadness, anguish, and the like. For the qualified working classes, the causes are attending parties or meetings where others drink; there is a high percentage of answers showing compassion for alcoholics. Helping attitudes are higher in these groups, and more permissive and flexible attitudes are found. A favorable disposition towards prevention programs is registered for more than 55% of the total number of adolescents in this research.
