Simulation on the digital computer was used to evaluate systems safety for high-density traffic of automatically controlled vehicles. The response of vehicle-borne and wayside emergency control systems to sudden failure of a moving vehicle and failure to detect a stalled vehicle ahead was investigated. The number and severity of the resulting collisions were used as measures of the system’s ability to cope with accidents. The capacity and safety performance of the wayside control system was found to be distinctly superior to that of the vehicle-borne system. For a desired lane capacity, the most reasonable operating speed depends primarily on vehicle length. Finally, the results indicate that significant (systems') safety benefits are obtained if vehicles are able to maintain their speedy movement for a short time after a collision.

THE purpose of the experiments reported here was to test the therapeutic effects of streptomycin on the disease known as ulcerative enteritis or quail disease in bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus). The work was initiated by one of use (CMK) early in August, 1949 when young quail which were being raised for another experiment began dying with ulcerative enteritis. Since the quail were being reared on wire it was felt that practical sanitary conditions were in effect, and as a possible emergency control, streptomycin was given an exploratory test. Sixteen birds eight weeks of age were selected at random from an infected pen and injected subcutaneously twice daily with 5 mg. of streptomycin in water for 12½ days. Sixteen quail similarly selected from the same infected group were held as non-treated controls. At the end of fourteen days only two of the treated birds had died, these in the first two . . .

Fifty consecutive patients with active hemorrhage from esophageal varices as demonstrated by emergency endoscopy were studied in a prospective fashion to determine the safety and effectiveness of the Boyce modification of the Sengstaken-Blakemore tube which was inserted and maintained according to a rigid protocol. Bleeding ceased with the first tamponade in 46 (92%) and in 5 of 8 patients (62.5%) who required a second tamponade after successful initial tamponade. Two major and seven minor complications occurred. Terminal aspiration of gastric contents may have contributed to one death. The modified Sengstaken-Blakemore tube, as used under the conditions of this prospective study, is both safe and effective in the accomplishment of its primary goal—the emergency control of variceal bleeding.

Author(s): Seyler, Kenneth; Niemeyer, Carter | Abstract: A maximum of 500 strychnine eggs were placed in designated skunk habitat within a three-mile radius where rabid skunks were diagnosed as an emergency control method to reduce or prevent the spread of rabies in striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) populations in northeastern Montana. The effects of strychnine on skunk and other non-target species populations were evaluated. When placed in primary skunk habitat, the toxicant eggs were selective in removing striped skunks. Scent post surveys indicated that skunk populations were reduced, while non-target species populations remained stable or increased in control areas. The effects of the toxicant egg program in reducing the incidence of rabies in striped skunks in northeastern Montana is not clear after only one year of data. Close surveillance of the emergency skunk control areas in succeeding years may indicate the need for continuation or expansion of similar programs.

This paper concerns controlling a string of vehicles on an automated highway using a sampled-data fixed reference control system suitable for a "moving cell" control scheme [1]. The reference consists of equally spaced information stations (posts) along the roadside. See Figure 1. As a car reaches a post, it receives data concerning its time of arrival error (convertible into position error) plus the value of the command velocity. Each car contains a means for measuring its own velocity. Thus an on-board controller independently controls each car using position error and velocity error. The shock wave effects of moving reference (car-following) systems [1] and the inter-car communication requirements of state feedback approaches to this problem [2] are avoided. Control is simple since each car controls itself and each post simultaneously sends the same information as all other posts. No inter-vehicle communication is required. The posts can also be used to monitor system behavior and detect emergencies, although this monitoring function is not discussed here.

THE SMALL MARGIN of reserve capacity existing throughout the electrical utility industry due to war and postwar shortages has created an increasing interest in methods of load reduction to meet temporary emergency conditions until normal capacity can be restored. Voltage and frequency reductions within limits will affect customers very minutely. However, the over-all reduction on a large system may be sufficient in most instances to avoid the necessity of interrupting load.
