A scrotal flap has been described to provide cover in penoscrotal hypospadias, and posi-operative fistulae near the root of the penis Scrotura is a store house of lax skin. Transposition of the flap is easy and closure of the scrotal defect presents no problems.

30. Direct Measurements of Skin Friction

Abstract

A device has been developed to measure local skin friction on a flat plate by measuring the force exerted upon a very small movable part of the surface of the flat plate. These forces, which range from about 1 milligram to about 100 milligrams, are measured by means of a reactance device. The apparatus was first applied to measurements in the low-speed range, both for laminar and turbulent boundary layers. The measured skin-friction coefficients show excellent agreement with Blasius' and Von Karman's results. The device was then applied to high-speed subsonic flow and the turbulent-skin-friction coefficients were determined up to a Mach number of about 0.8. A few measurements in supersonic flow were also made. This paper describes the design and construction of the device and the results of the measurements.

32. On Reflection of Shock Waves from Boundary Layers

Abstract

Measurements are presented at Mach numbers from about 1.3 to 1.5 of reflection characteristics and the relative upstream influence of shock waves impinging on a flat surface with both laminar and turbulent boundary layers. The difference between impulse and step waves is discussed and their interaction with the boundary layer is compared. General considerations on the experimental production of shock waves from wedges and cones and examples of reflection of shock waves from supersonic shear layers are also presented.

Abstract

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25) and morphine have been shown to antagonise certain actions of each other. LSD-25 antagonises morphine induced analgesia in rats (1) and emesis in dogs (2). It also blocks the miotic action of morphine (3). On the other hand, morphine blocks LSD-25 pyrexia in rabbits (4). The present study was undertaken to investigate if morphine could antagonise the central hypotensive action of LSD-25 reported by Ginzel (5).

41. On the Design and Use of a Flexible Nozzle for the GALCIT Transonic Wind Tunnel

Abstract

Some aspects concerning the design of flexible nozzles for use in supersonic wind tunnels are discussed. Methods are investigated for matching the deflection patterns of nozzle plates and the theoretical aerodynamic shapes required for uniform, parallel, shockfree flow. Application of the design procedures to the Galcit 4" x 10", transonic wind tunnel is detailed. As a demonstration of a use of the tunnel, the Mach number of shock detachment from a 10° wedge (half angle) is experimentally investigated.

49. The Stomach in Chronic Iron Deficiency Anemia.

Abstract

Maximal acid output and gastric histology were studied in 39 cases of iron deficiency anemia initially and again two to six months after treatment of anemia. Acid output increased by nearly double, the increase in men being nearly five times that in women. Four males and nine females had achlorhydria initially. After treatment, acid was restored in three males and four females. The reasons for this difference in the two sexes are discussed. Another factor affecting reversibility of acid secretion was serum iron level, the increase in M.A.O. being significantly more in cases with scrum iron above 40 ug per cent. Two-thirds of the cases showed abnormal gastric mucosa. Histological improvement occurred in only one case, A good correlation was also observed between gastric histology and improvement in acid output. cases with atrophic gastritis showing the least recovery.
