A simple, rapid, reliable and inexpensive procedure for the measurement of serum thyroxine is described. Evaporation of the serum extract is not necessary and the sensitivity, precision and accuracy of the method compare well with more elaborate procedures. The cost per duplicate assay of less than ten pence is considerably less than that of any of the available kit methods.

Summary From a study of the anatomy and stratigraphic history of Zemira it is concluded that the genus can tentatively remain in the Pseudolivinae of the Olivldae. where it has usually been placed by recent authors Zemira differs from other members of the Olividae in having a Simple foot, in not having an elongated anteror Siphon and in lacking accessory salivary glands. Eburnopsis Tate is a synonym of Zemira Adams & Adams and Z. praecursoria Tate and Eburnopsis aulacoessa Tate are synonyms of Z. australis australis (G. B. Sowerby 1). Z. australis antecursoria subsp. nov. (Lower Miocene) is described. The other spedes Included in the genus are Z. tessellata (Tate) and Z. bodalla Garrard.

A pharmacokinetic profile of the gonadotrophin inhibitor, 19β- cis -ethyliden-17α-ethynyl-17β-hydroxy-1,4,6-androstatrien-3-one (Ro 6-5403) was determined in two female subjects following oral and intravenous administration of tritium labelled drug. The plasma level of intact Ro 6-5403 was approximately 1 μg/100 ml at 1 h following oral administration of 2 mg of drug and had declined to about 0.2μg/100 ml after 8 h. The plasma disappearance curve after intravenous injection was consistent with a two-compartment open system model and indicated fast distribution and elimination with a half life of 86–116 min. Over 60 % of the radioactive dose was excreted in the urine within 3 days following either route of administration. Only about 1 % of the urinary radioactivity was associated with unchanged Ro 6-5403, indicating almost complete biotransformation and/or alternate routes of excretion. Investigation of the distribution of 3 H-activity in the urine revealed that 5 % was unconjugated, 20 % released by β-glucuronidase hydrolysis and 25 % by solvolysis.

Long-term water testing of oil storage tanks can result in significant savings in foundation costs at sites underlain by soft soils. Settlements of a few inches to two feet were observed at four tanks sites of widely varying soil conditions during water tests of one month to one year. Reasonably good agreement was obtained between observed settlements and the calculated elastic plus consolidation settlements when appropriate time-rates of consolidation were used. Field time rates were generally faster than that obtained using average laboratory values of the coefficient of consolidation. Some plastic flow of the soft clays was believed to have occurred at one site at water loads that imposed foundation pressures approximately one-half the bearing capacity of the clay. Piezometers and inlinometers were installed in the soft soils at another site to permit safe loading of the tanks at the maximum rate. The differential settlements that developed during the water tests at two sites due to nonuniform soil conditions required relevelling of some tanks. The cost of such relevelling was only a small fraction of the cost of pile foundations.

One of the minor beliefs of Catholics is that a taste for statistics is not a necessary condition for salvation. This view, in which Catholics have persisted for some nineteen centuries without any unfortunate effects to the faith, presents considerable difficulties to anyone who is foolhardy enough to attempt to trace the main pattern of the development of the Catholic population of Scotland during the last three centuries; but some consolation can be drawn from the fact that at least one of the great post-reformation prelates, Archbishop Charles Eyre, did have a most decided taste for population statistics which he cultivated to good effect during his thirty years of office in Glasgow at the end o f the nine­ teenth century. His most substantial work in this field was done for the restoration of the Hierarchy in 1878 and it is perhaps fitting in this year in which is commemorated the seventy-fifth anniversary o f that restoration that his work on population statistics should be particularly remembered in an article which attempts to survey a much wider field.

A study of the PhHgCCl2Br/PhHgCl, PhHgCCl2Br/p-CH3C6H4HgCl, PhHgCCl2Br/HgCl2 and the PhHgCHClBr/PhHgCl systems (in benzene at reflux) has established that dichloro- and monochlorocarbene insert into the HgCl bond under these conditions to give HgCCl3 and HgCHCl2 compounds, respectively. The reaction with p-tolylmercuric chloride, which gave only p-tolyl(trichloromethyl)mercuric chloride, showed that CCl2 transfer into the HgCl linkage is involved. Indirect evidence was also obtained for the insertion of CBrCl and CBr2 into the mercury-chlorine bond.
