The article presents the follow-up study that identifies the prognostic variables among 66 female narcotic addicts who were admitted to Holloway Prison in Great Britain from January 1967 to June 1968, by examining the relationship between outcome and several social and psychological characteristics of the patients. The findings of this study showed that 36 of these female heroin addicts had remained addicted and 15% had died. The eight variables between female addicts with a good outcome and those with poor outcome were compared. The assessment on outcome was done in terms of continued addiction and delinquency and in terms of addiction status alone. It was found that the convictions indicated a significant inverse relationship to abstinence.

The article presents a study which compares the extent of sexual dysfunction and the incidence of perverted behavior in two groups of drug-dependent subjects, the intravenous users of narcotics and the oral users of amphetamine. Subjects of the study were in-patients at the Bethlehem Royal Hospital in London, England. Psychosexual histories of the patients were obtained and analyzed for the incidence of perversions and for evidence of diminished activity in different areas of sexually-related functioning. Users of narcotics were found to be more sexually disrupted than oral amphetamine users, with female users more disturbed than males. On the other hand, there was no difference found between the two groups for the incidence of perversions.

The article focuses on a study regarding the identification processes of narcotic drug addicts admitted in hospitals. It was aimed to examine their ability in identifying addicts. The identification skills of each addict was determined through their self-evaluation on habits, feelings, and attitudes. Addicts who attributed the evaluations to themselves were specified as high identifiers. High identifiers are expected to be more considerate than low identifiers on the lifestyles of addicts. They are also considered to have stronger and rebellious attitudes.

The article focuses on the characteristics of drug addicts within the state prison population in the U.S. The admission of drug addicts to prison presents an immediate medical and administrative problem. The case histories of 32 adult male felon drug addicts, admitted to the Diagnostic Center in 1971, were selected as the experimental group. The racial structure of the sample was controlled to reflect the racial composition of the 1971 adult felon male admissions. The group of 32 imprisoned male drug addicts were found to present differences in their social backgrounds from the group of 38 imprisoned male non-addict drug abusers.

The article discusses the study which is aimed to evaluate the drug involvement scale for classification of drug abusers in the U.S. The precise method for quantifying the degree of drug involvement would be advantageous in evaluating the histories and treatment needs of drug abusers. The subjects for the study were 590 active duty Navy and Marine Corps enlisted men examined upon entrance to the Naval Drug Rehabilitation Center (NDRC), Miramar Naval Air Station, San Diego, California between July and December 1971.

The article focuses on the psychological characteristics of drug abuse clients in the U.S. community mental health center. Community mental health centers were called to formulate treatment programs for self and court referred drug abuse clients. The subjects were divided into four groups based on the admission and drug use history. The soft drug users were all white with the median education of 13.9 years and a median age equal to 20.6. Three classes of drug abusers and members of the treatment staff of the community drug program were given personality scales as a part of their evaluation.

A study of 60 male patients from London, England hospital drug clinics showed that 92 percent held a court conviction and 48 percent had been convicted before the drug use. Drug users with no pre-drug convictions had experienced less early deprivation than drug users with pre-drug convictions.

The article presents a research concerning the significance of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) in diagnosing the hospitalized drug abusers in the U.S. The study examined a population of young hospitalized psychiatric patients who may be considered to have relevant emotional problems. There are 139 psychiatric patients administered the MMPI on admission to hospital. It was found out that the mean MMPI profiles were similar in terms of high-point code. This suggests that drug user traits are characteristic of all young people with psychological difficulties.

The article discusses the study which aims to present an enumerative survey of abuse of heroin and methadone among persons aged 30 and below in Oxford, England in 1969. The sources used in this survey include the press, the city children's department, local authority and independent schools, the police, the Oxford Probation Service, hospitals, general practitioners, the city's Medical Officer of Health, and drug users. The study reveals that there is high relative prevalence of dependence in girls aged 15-19, and there is a statistically significant difference from the sex distribution in the Registrar General's Annual Estimates.

The article presents a study of adolescent drug addicts and his family which aims to compare the addicts with their full siblings regarding their relationships with their parents, physical illnesses, childhood neurotic and antisocial traits and behavior patterns and the incidence of psychiatric illness. Findings revealed that the degree of personality disturbance shown by addicts appeared to be associated to their intense hostility towards their fathers. In addition, addicts had more serious physical illnesses and had more neurotic and antisocial problems compared to their siblings. Moreover, results indicated that more than one-third of the parents and older siblings of adolescent drug addicts were disturbed on receiving psychiatric treatment.
