A drug education class was given by a physician to six U.S. Army units consisting of 947 soldiers. Four hundred seventy-seven (50.5 per cent) of the soldiers in this group admitted on an anonymous questionnaire to illegal drug use at the time the class was given. In order to determine whether the drug education classes decreased illegal drug use, the same six groups were administered an anonymous questionnaire 3 months after the class. A total of 39 per cent of LSD users; 24 per cent of amphetamine users; 25 per cent of sedative-hypnotic users; and 45 per cent of opiate users reported discontinuation or decrease in their respective drug consumption which they attributed to the drug education class. Drug-related hospitalizations decreased from 22 in the 12 months prior to the class to 11 during the following 12 months. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article focuses on the conceptual and empirical difficulties in drug education in the United States. One of the biggest problem with drug education in the country is that experts often distort facts about drugs. A comprehensive survey of drug education films in the U.S. revealed that most of the films were inaccurate and did not meet technical standards. The behavior of drug educators is found to be slow to changes in adaptive directions due to delays in feedback of a program. The typical nature of data pertaining to drug education is also one of the problems.

Thirty-five suburban youths charged with drug abuse were referred by juvenile court judges to GUIDE, an experimental program of drug education and rehabilitation staffed by volunteer physicians. The adolescents had utilized a wide range of psychoactive agents and experienced difficulties in academic and interpersonal areas. Seventeen of 35 had neuropsychiatric disorders and generally the youths lacked direction and skills to pursue goals. An innovative drug information and rap program on a Big 10 campus, privately funded for one year, provides elements that may, with variations, be adopted for other campus drug programs. This article indicates that for a general population of students drug education via the news media was most effective and most influential. It was the source from which over 50 per cent of the students learned most about drugs and also the source to which almost 50 per cent attributed their decision that marihuana was harmful. The other sources such as family, friends, or school and church played only a minor role. Another important finding of the study, especially in Toronto, Ontario and Halifax, Nova Scotia was that the influence of the source is heavily dependent on the inclination of the student to use drugs. Those students who do not use drugs rely on the news media. But drug users rely on their own experience or on friends. This suggests that the purposes and target population of drug education must be clearly defined. If the goals are mainly preventive, drug education will be directed at those students who have not yet used drugs. If the goal of the program is primarily to bring a halt to present drug experimentation, then the target population is the drug users. Nonusers can best be reached through news media, and drug users through more personal contacts. The reasons for the discrepancies in the Montreal data are not known. Cultural factors may have been involved.

This article focuses on a new approach to teaching about drugs. The ultimate purpose of drug education is to teach about the dangers of drugs, thereby reducing the current epidemic of drug abuse and aiding in the prevention of experimentation that may lead to abuse. Despite good intentions of many individuals and agencies to inform about drugs as a way to curb experimentation and abuse, education about drugs has been ineffective and, in many instances, is of questionable value. School personnel have been drawn into the drug crisis because community pressures have demanded that administrators do something about the drug problems threatening schools, children and youth in the community.

Recent literature attests to the growth of programs that deal with drug abusers. Most of these programs are located on campuses and are oriented to the campus population. This article deals with a broader-based, community-oriented, hot-line counseling service designed to assist drug abusers. This article examined the drug of misuse to determine the age groups which are particularly associated with their use and abuse. To identify a particular age group abusing these particular drugs is quite difficult, since of the number of registered addicts known to the Home Office the age range is considerable. In the United Kingdom, since 1965, the suicide and accidental overdosage deaths from barbiturates has almost doubled and of the total annual drug poisonings two-thirds are due exclusively to barbiturates. The misuse of barbiturates seems to be more acute in the middle!aged who become psychologically, if not physiologically, dependent upon the drugs.

The article examines the developments of the U.S. Army Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. The program was established to reduce the number of Army members who are alcohol and drug offenders through more effective techniques. Several factors were associated for the decrease of the incidence and prevalence of Army drug abuse including education of potential users, efforts of discovering the abusers, strengthening of law enforcement surveillance, and attempts to dissuade users from possible involvement.

The article reports on the evaluation of several drug abuse education films by the National Coordinating Council on Drug Abuse Education and Information in the U.S. An evaluation team formed by the organization has classified many of the films as scientifically unacceptable. Executive Peter Hammond explained that the review was conducted to provide guidelines for the use of drug education films. The nationally recognized panel involved in the review included psychiatrists, psychologists and several educators. The panel examines the facts, distortion of scientific data, inaccurate portrayal of drugs and their effects among other factors.
