A prospective study has been done on 96 full term small-for-date infants to determine the incidence and type of neurological and intellectual sequelae. Major neurological defects were uncommon with an incidence of 1% for cerebral palsy and 6% for convulsions. Minimal cerebral dysfunction characterized by hyperactivity, a short attention span, learning difficulties, poor fine coordination and hyper-reflexia was diagnosed in 25%. EEG abnormalities predominantly of a diffuse mild nature were seen in 59% of the boys and 69% of the girls (similar EEG tracings are reported in 27% of apparently normal children). Speech defects featuring immaturity of reception and expression were present in 33% of the boys and 26% of the girls. Hearing and vision were not appreciably affected. The average IQ was 95 (boys) and 101 (girls). However 50% of the boys and 36% of the girls had a poor school performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The long-term effects of H. influenzae meningitis were studied in 86 patients who were treated with acceptable antibiotic therapy during acute episode in 1950 to 1964 in Nashville, Tennessee. Follow-up revealed that 11 were dead (eight died within first 24 hours of hospitalization). Fifty-six of them returned to Vanderbilt Medical Center for the following appraisals: history, general physical and neurological examinations; pure tone audiometry evaluation; and psychological testing by Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. Nineteen others sent information by questionnaire. Results indicated that 26 (29%) survivors had severe or significant handicaps; 12 (14%) had possible residuals; and 37 (43%) were free of detectable deficits. A laparotomy-proved pyogenic hepatic abscess was the initial clinical manifestation of sickle cell disease in a 4-year-old black boy. Although this complication has been reported in an adult patient with sickle cell disease, it has not been reported previously in children nor as the presenting manifestation of this state. Peptococcus species, a strictly anaerobic staphylococcus never previously reported implicated in a liver abscess, was isolated from two blood cultures. Inadequate anaerobic bacteriologic techniques may explain the failure to identify the causative organism in up to 60% of pyogenic hepatic abscesses.
