This article focuses on the book "Power and Diplomacy," by Dean Acheson. It should be pleasant news that at long last Dean Acheson has opened up as the nation's ex-Secretary of State after playing the Democrat who looks at his party and the citizen who looks at U.S. Congress. Acheson doesn't use these words, it is the distilled judgment from the sum of his propositions. American industry must double its capacity. American labor must become less selfish. American society must become re-dedicated to freedom's cause, whatever the dollar cost.

Presents information on a movement of the Liberal College for the recovery of the college community and the basic principles of liberal education. View that the Liberal College began as an idea but has turned into a movement; Fact that its appearance coincided with the inevitable revision of the curriculum which the sciences compelled and with the westward surge of higher education which produced the great state universities; Opinion of Alexander Meiklejohn, the spokesman of the movement on the principles of the Liberal College; Reference to an article published in the January issue of the periodical Century; Need of a new college in which the ideal of liberal education may be realized; Information on small and independent colleges that are devoted to general, liberal education; Statement that colleges which have preserved intact their traditions of site and homogeneity have at the same time suffered the heaviest casualties in the struggle to modernize their content; Report that the only unity anyone would want in an educational scheme is the unity that comes of self-understanding of the civilization; Proposal of Meiklejohn regarding the preparation of his students for their ultimate task by giving them a synoptic picture of two preceding civilizations.

Presents information on an agreement signed by the U.S. government with its former war associates regarding the reparations obtained from Germany under the Dawes plan. View that the new contract is chiefly a recognition by the Allies that the American government surrendered none of its rights in a settlement with Germany through its failure to ratify the Versailles Treaty; Fact that under the Paris agreement the U.S. will share to a certain extent in the benefit of any reparations which may be extracted from Germany; Opinion of the English newspapers on the agreement signed by the American government; Report that in the event of default by Germany it would share with its associates the responsibility for any action which they might take in order to collect their claims; Assumption of the U.S. regarding a partnership with unlimited liability for the successful operation of such a profoundly doubtful experiment as the Dawes plan; Effect of the failure of the agreement on the future policy of the American government; Discussion of the question that whether the U.S. should or should not participate in Europe in business and politics; Description of the Dawes plan that was intended to bring about the evacuation of the Ruhr, Germany and to restore the possibility of economic activity in Germany.

16. POLLEN AND DIATOM ANALYSES OF LATE-QUATERNARY DEPOSITS IN THE BLELHAM BASIN, NORTH LANCASHIRE.

Abstract

Investigations have been made of Late-Weichselian and Flandrian deposits in Blelham Tarn, Lancashire and other parts of its basin. Pollen and diatom analyses have been made of several cores and samples taken from the inflows. Pollen analysis has been used as a basis for chronology. The vegetational history of the region and past diatom flora of the tarn and `kettle-hole' are discussed. During the Late-Weichselian, in pollen zones I and III, the vegetation was dominated by herbs of open habitats, whilst in pollen zone II birch woodland developed. The diatom flora consisted mainly of non-planktonic forms with Fragilaria spp. dominant. In the Early- Flandrian (pollen zones IV-VI) birch woodland developed and was succeeded by a mixed oak forest. Differences are shown in the pollen spectra from the 'kettle-hole', marginal and open water regions of the tarn. The planktonic/non-planktonic (P/NP) diatom ratio slowly increased in the tarn. However, dominance was retained by the non-planktonic forms. This increase in P/NP ratio did not occur in the 'kettle-hole' region. A new diatom variety Melosira distans var. bleihamensis appeared in the flora. At the opening of pollen zone VIIa Alnus rapidly increased and for the first time planktonic diatoms became dominant in the open waters of the tarn. In littoral regions non-planktonic forms, in particular Achnanthes minutissima var. cryptocephala, remained dominant. Sphagnum-sedge peat accumulated in the 'kettle-hole'. Diatoms are scarce in this peat. During the Late-Flandrian (pollen zone VIIb to the present day) the local vegetation was an older mixed oak forest. However, more open vegetational conditions gradually developed as shown by the increase in herbaceous pollen. Dominance was held in the open waters by the planktonic diatoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article focuses on the book "The Sweeniad," written by Myra Buttle. The book is in the form of a nightmare mock trial, where the case for and against Sweeney is argued before a tribunal. There is a postulator and a devil's advocate, as there is when the Roman Catholic Church decides whether or not to make someone a saint. This book is a savagely satirical 66 pages, of poet T.S. Eliot's book "Waste Land." It is surprising indeed, in 1958, to find anyone prepared to set down as pungent and devastating the naive variations on the theme of Progress as a Good Thing that are contained in the book.

Abstract

The Publications of the Bedfordshire Historical Record Society, vol. 20‘Jacobean household inventories,'by F. G. Emmison. [The editor claims that this is the first collection of inventories to be published with analytical notes. A 50-page introduction and analysis of the inventories under the headings houses, furniture, domestic life, farmyard and valuations is followed by transcriptions of all 166 inventories for the period 1617 to 1619/20. These are full text transcriptions with the original spelling, only lacking the names of appraisers.] ‘Recusancy and nonconformity in Bedfordshire, illustrated by select documents between 1622 and 1842,'edited by W. M. Wigfield. [The statistical analysis of the population of Bedfordshire parishes is based on the Liber Cleri of 1603 in Lincoln diocesan records (published in Lincoln Record Society vol. 23, 1926), the hearth tax returns of 1671, the Compton census of 1676, and returns to episcopal visitations of 1717-1720. Population tables are broken down into nonconformists and Roman Catholics. The documents illustrating recusancy and nonconformity include extracts from assize and quarter session records, archdeacons'visitations, Quaker records, returns of recusants in 1628 and 1679, manorial court records, presentment of dissenters in 1666 and administrative instructions (eg for the search for suitable parliamentary candidates in 1687).]
