Raman spectra are reported for SH − ions isolated in potassium halide crystals at pressures up to 40 kbar. Effects of compression of the crystalline environment and of the foc-simple cubic phase transformation on the SH − stretching vibration are treated in terms of a simple ionic model which considers coulombic, Born-Mayer repulsive, and polarization contributions to the lattice perturbation. Significant local distortion of the host lattice by the impurity had to be assumed to obtain a satisfactory fit to the experimental results with this model.
