Research on student assessment of teachers is reviewed to answer the questions: What discriminations do students make? Are ratings a function of a course or of a teacher? Which teacher and course characteristics are most important? Do ratings reflect the amount learned? Do teachers profit from feedback? (Author/JH)

Kuching Wetland National Park (KWNP) is one of the RAMSAR wetlands in Malaysia, a wetland of international importance. Understanding the water quality of the riverine system that drains the KWNP is crucial for sustainable management of the wetland. Hence, the water quality of Sibu Laut River, which forms the western boundary of the park, is described in this study. Three samplings were carried out during low tide along the western boundary of the wetland. Sub-surface and near-bottom water samples at six selected sampling sites were taken and analysed for physico-chemical parameters. The variations between sub-surface and near-bottom water column of those parameters were detectable and due mainly to the influence of tidal currents. A peak of sub-surface organic phosphorus was observed at station 2 next to the village of Sibu Laut whereas elevated near-bottom organic phosphorus was observed at station 4 near to the shrimp farm. Organic phosphorus represents a significant fraction of the total phosphorus, comprising from 59.76% to 83.64% and 62.50% to 78.67% for sub-surface and near-bottom water, respectively. In contrast, inorganic phosphorus was extremely low at most of the stations. There is a significant correlation between organic phosphorus and chlorophyll a, which indicates association of organic phosphorus and phytoplankton in the study area. The present study showed that Sibu Laut River had minimal pollution impact to the wetland, except the elevated sub-surface organic phosphorus near the Sibu Laut Village and elevated near-bottom organic phosphorus near the shrimp farm. Continuous monitoring program is important for early detection of future threats to the water quality of Sibu Laut River.

Concentrations of Ni, Ga, Ge and Ir have been determined in the metal and silicate portions of 21 chondrites, including 15 H chondrites. The H-group metal shows the following concentration ranges: 7.2–9.4 per cent Ni, 2.4–18 ppm Ga, 61–70 ppm Ge and 1.6–4.6 ppm Ir, and concentrations in H-group silicates are 94–380 ppm Ni, 3.0–9.2 ppm Ga, 0.06–0.66 ppm Ge and 0.03–0.12 ppm Ir. The Ni, Ge and Ir contents in the metal are positively correlated with each other and with the Fe content of olivine, as expected from oxidation-reduction or combined metal-silicate-fractionation/oxidation-reduction models. Metal/silicate concentration ratios for Ir are lower than for Ge and Ni, despite the fact that Ir is more easily reduced to the elemental form. This may indicate that at the formation location of the H-group chondrites in the solar nebula, substantial amounts of Ir were present in condensed form at temperatures which were so high that Fe and Ni were present mainly as vapor. The metal/silicate concentration ratios of Ga and Ge are lower in type-3 ordinary chondrites than in types 4–6. Apparently appreciable fractions of these elements condensed from the nebula in oxidized form and entered the metal during later thermal events. That Ga and Ge were redistributed during recrystallization, whereas appreciable Ir remained in the silicate fraction, probably indicates that Ir faced a substantially greater diffusional barrier than did Ga and Ge.

Concentrations of Ga and Ge in the metal of 31 L-, 8 LL- and 2 H-chondrites, and in the silicates of 12 L- and LL-chondrites have been determined by spectrophotometric methods. The ranges of Ga contents in the metal of L- and LL-chondrites are 1.1 to 36.9 ppm and 1.0 to 34.1 ppm, respectively. The Ge content in the metal is positively correlated with Ga and ranges from 89.1 to 160 ppm and from 126 to 308 ppm for L- and LL-chondrites, respectively. The Ga content in the silicates of L-chondrites varies from 4.0 to 8.9 ppm. The Ga and Ge contents in the metal are clearly lower in unequilibrated than in equilibrated L- and LL-group chondrites. Unequilibrated and equilibrated chondrites are well separated in the plots of Ga vs Ge in the metal, and the L- and LL-groups are also well resolved. The Ga and Ge in the metal are well correlated with petrologic grade. This suggests that Ga and Ge variations in the metal are related to thermal metamorphism. There is evidence of an enrichment of Ga in the metal due to shock reheating.

Although the development of cloud computing has gradually matured, studies on the use of cloud computing for medical information systems remain deficient. In this study, a two-stage model was used to perform related analysis. Stage one of the model employed a mathematical model to estimate the cost model for self-built information systems as well as the involved risk loss. The difference in the information systems' costs and operational performance with and without cloud computing technology were discussed. Stage Two of the model used the technology acceptance model integrated with the flow theory to investigate the behaviour and attitude of the medical staff toward cloud computing technology, the criteria for them to accept the technology, and their subsequent continuous use intention. The moderated structural equation modelling results generally supported the hypotheses. The article concludes by discussing the theoretical and implications of the research findings. This research offers management the opportunity to asset the overall hospital information system process and improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Inter-row competition among soybean (L. Merrill) genotypes was studied separately for maturity groups I and II by comparing the performance of four genotypes in each group using bordered and nonbordered plots. Two spacings between rows, 46 and 91 cm, were used during 3 years, 1965, 1966, and 1967. Seed yield, plant height, weight of 100 seeds, maturity, and lodging index were the characters investigated to study competitive effects. Differences among genotypes for yield competitive effects were found with the narrow but not the wide row spacing. These differences were greater among group I then among group II genotypes. Specific and specific ✕ genotype interactions for competition effects involving yield were-not significant. Adjusted average competitive effects for each character and the bias for yield of each genotype in each group for each row spacing were estimated. The magnitude of these effects for seed yield suggested the need for bordered plots at the narrow but not at the wide row spacing. Adjusted average competitive effects for characters other than yield, while statistically significant in certain tests, were too small to be of any practical consequence.

A review of evaluative research on the Keller plan establishes the following points: 1) The Keller plan is an attractive teaching method to most students. In every published report, students rate the Keller plan much more favorably than teaching by lecture. 2) Self-pacing and interaction with tutors seem to be the features of the Keller courses most favored by students. 3) Several investigators report higher-than-average withdrawal rates for their Keller sections. The conditions that influence withdrawal and procrastination in Keller courses have been studied, and it seems possible to control procrastination and withdrawal through course design. 4) Content learning (as measured by final examinations) is adequate in Keller courses. In the published studies, final examination performance in Keller sections always equals, and usually exceeds, performance in lecture sessions. 5) Students almost invariably report that they learn more in PSI than in lecture courses, and also nearly always report putting more time and effort into the Keller courses.

The in vivo and in vitro incorporation of radioactive sulfate (35S) into mactin A is demonstrated using various gill preparations of the surf clam (Spisula solidissima) and the whole animal. 2. 2. The incorporation of sulfate is inhibited 75 per cent by 5 × 10−3 M molybdate and 90 per cent by 1 × 10−3M β-naphthylamine. 3. 3. PAPS plays the role of sulfate donor in the process. 4. 4. Mg2+ is required in the sulfation of mactin A. 5. 5. α- D - Glucose -U- 14 C is incorporated into mactin A, indicating its possible de novo synthesis. 6. 6. The concentration of mactin A and the enzymatic activity related to the sulfation process appear to be higher in the cell particles. 7. 7. Chondroitinase, “heparinase” and hyaluronidase do not act on mactin A.

Rat liver l -cysteine sulfinate (2-amino-3-sulfinopropionate) decarboxylase ( l -cysteine sulfinate carboxy-lyase, EC 4.1.1.29) was purified 300-fold. The purification was achieved by the use of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 fractionation between 35–45% satn., gel filtration on Sephadex G-100, and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. This is the most active and stable cysteine sulfinate decarboxylase reported to date. Observations made by polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis, molecular sieving on Sephadex G-100, and analytical ultracentrifugation appear to show that the purified enzyme was approaching homogeneity. The sedimentation coefficient and the molecular weight were estimated to be approx. 4.76 S and 66 000, respectively. The cysteine sulfinate decarboxylase activity was measured in Tris-maleate, imidazole, and phosphate buffers at pH 6.8, and the maximal activity was observed in the phosphate buffer. The purified cysteine sulfinate decarboxylase has an apparent K m of 0.2 mM and does not catalyze the decarboxylation of cysteate (2-amino-3-sulfonopropionate). Cupric and mercuric ions are the only metal ions tested which showed some inhibition of the enzyme activity. Dithiothreitol and 2-mercaptoethanol were found as effective as glutathione as activators for cysteine sulfinate decarboxylase.

The angular distribution and differential cross-section of the proton groups from the C12(d,p)C13 and Ca40(d,p)Ca41 ground state reactions have been measured at the deu-teron energy of 13.3 MeV. Measurements were made at 2.5° or 5° intervals and covered the angular range from 3° to 167° and from 10° to 164° for the C12 and Ca40 reactions respectively. It is found that: (1) The experimental points near the main stripping peak agree fairly well with the theoretical angular distribution curve calculated by using the simple Butler theory and normalized at the stripping peak, for both proton groups. The parameters of the nuclear levels thus determined are in good accord with the results previously obtained. (2) For large angles, the experimental cross-sections do not decrease to such small values as required by the Butler theory. They also show very prominent subsidiary maxima at the positions not in accord with the prediction of the Butler theory. These features can be interpreted by the distorted wave theory, but may also be partly due to contributions of reaction mechanisms other than the deuteron stripping. (3) In the C12(d, p)C13 reaction, the cross-section decreases strongly at the forward angle and shows an uprising at the backward angle. Neither of these features is in accord with the Butler theory, but they can also be explained by the distorted wave theory. The uprising at the backward angle may also be due to contributions of other reaction mechanisms. (4) The reduced widths of the ground levels for the C12(d, p)C13 and Ca40(d, p)Ca41 reactions, obtained from the peak cross-sections by using the Butler theory are γ2 = 0-17 and 0.041 respectively. The distorted wave theory gives larger values which will be closer to the values expected from the single particle model. Owing to these facts, it seems worthwhile to analyze the data of the present experiment with the detailed distorted wave theory.

Line profiles and shifts of the Mg II 4481 A line (32D-42F) were measured for a range of electron number densities from 7 X 1016 to 3.1 X 1017 clectrons/c.c. An oscillatory condenser discharge was used as a spectroscopic source. Electron-number densities were determined from measured widths of the Hβ line after addition of water vapour to the source. Good fit of the experimental contour of Hβ with the theoretical contour based on Griem-Kolb-Shen's calculation was observed. Experimental shifts toward the violet were measured to be proportion to the square of the normal microfield. An empirical quadratic Stark effect constant C4 = 5.0 X 10-14cm4/sec was determined from these data. The widths of the line profile bear a similar relation with the fields. Ratios of the width to shift, r/△, were found to remain constant in the range of experimental conditions studied. The value is r/△ = 10.4±0.6. Theoretical calculation of the shift of the upper term 42F due to the quadratic Stark effect perturbation of 42D term allows one to explain the quadratic dependence on field, but the values of shift are smaller in comparison with experimental data, indicating an additional contribution by electrons. The widths of the line have been compared with the theoretical formula of Lindholm and Griem et al's approximate formula. Simple estimate shows a better agreement with the latter.

The polarization of protons emitted at six angles from the C12(d,p)C13 and Ca40(d,p)Ca41 ground state reactions has been measured. For the C12 reaction, the data at small angles are very close to the results of previous works, and in agreement with thesemiclassical sign rule jn=ln±1/2,P=(±). The value at θ= 115° has not been mea-sured before, we obtained P = 0.529± 0.068 at this angle. For the Ca40 reaction, the sign of polarization which we found in the region of small angles is also in agreement with the semiclassical sign rule, and is the same as those found in the work of Nemetz and of Boschitz, but is opposite to those obtained by Takeda and Bercaw. This difference may be due to the difference in the deuteron energy used, since in these experiments, the three with higher deuteron energies all gave the same positive sign of polarization while the three with lower deuteron energies all gave the same negative sign. After a survey of the polarization data now available we found that the semiclassical sign rule is still true to a certain degree, and that it may be possible to find out a modified sign rule for the use in the nuclear spectroscopy. In some cases, we found that the pattern of the polarization angular distribution is shifted towards small angles as the deuteron energy is increased, and this may be a characteristic of direct reactions. For the correspondence between the cross-section angular distribution and polarization angular distribution, we found that the position of a minimum in the cross-section curve may correspond to the position of a change in sign or of a maximum absolute value in the polarization curve, and that the position of a maximum in the cross-section curve may also correspond to the position of a change in sign in the polarization curve. We discuss these phenomena by using the distored wave theory.
