Abstract

A post doctoral fellowship to study the language handicapped child is briefly discussed. The report concludes a year of study during which the author attempts to develop a foundation to bring education and medicine together to meet the challenge of the language handicapped child. The major areas of study - reading, linguistics, and psychology as it relates to language acquisition - are identified, and formal classes attended are cited. Research conducted is very briefly mentioned and three broad categories (information, research, and long range planning), under which the author feels the activities of the fellowship can be concluded, are outlined. 11. Ocular Manifestations of the Pierre Robin Syndrome

Abstract

The Pierre Robin syndrome1-4 is characterized by three defects: (1) micrognathia, (2) cleft palate, and (3) glossoptosis. This clinical entity is readily apparent at birth as the newborn has immediate difficulty in breathing and nursing. Nasal regurgitation of milk is often noted. Frequent suction and careful nursing care are essential to prevent aspiration in these infants. However, if these children can be maintained until age 5 or 6 years, virtually normal swallowing function will usually develop.After encountering a 2-month-old white boy with Pierre Robin syndrome and severe bilateral congenital glaucoma, our attention was directed to ocular involvement in these cases. This is a report of seven cases of Pierre Robin syndrome, four of whom had bilateral ocular disease. To our knowledge, ocular involvement is a hitherto unrecognized part of this clinical picture. Abstract

APPENDICITIS is rare in the first few months of life. Fields et al1 collected 7,170 cases in children less than 12 years of age from the literature, and there were none less than 1 month old.Acute appendicitis in the infant is decidedly uncommon and it is most lethal. One collection of 17 cases in the neonate revealed 15 deaths.2 Perforation and diffuse peritonitis is the rule rather than the exception. Despite the fact that the overall mortality in appendicitis has decreased to a low level, a high percentage of deaths still occurs in the very young.2The authors report a case of neonatal appendicitis in a premature infant which accompanied an episode of gastroenteritis. REPORT OF A CASE A male premature infant weighed 4 lb 7 oz (2,000 gm) at birth. The delivery was uneventful. The newborn did well until the 24th day of life when
