Abstract

The influence of the concentration of oxygen without any added photosensitizing agent on the photolysis of gaseous tetrafluoroethylene has been studied at 2537 A and 1849 A. The results are discussed in relation to the different products obtained and their possible mechanism of formation.

Abstract

Tetrafluoroethylene reacts with molecular oxygen in the dark and at low temperature to give an explosive rubber-like polymer, which has the structure (CF 2 CF 2 OO) n , together with minor amounts of tetrafluoroethylene oxide, carbonyl fluoride and perfluorocyclopropane. The reactio is strongly accelerated by ozone. Some reactions of tetrafluoroethylene oxide are also described.

Abstract

The oxidation of tetrafluoroethylene by molecular oxygen, induced by small amounts of ozone, has been studied by a flow method both in the gas phase and in 1, 1, 2-trichlorotrifluoroethane at 15° and atmospheric pressure. The reaction yields, besides the major volatile products (COF 2 and C 2 F 4 O), a liquid product which has essentially a poly(oxyperfluoromethylene) structure, (CF 2 O) n . The influence of the pressure of the reactants on the irregularities of this chain and on the relative formation rates of the products is discussed in terms of an addition-elimination mechanism, involving fission of most of the peroxidic and CC bonds of the polymeric chain.

Abstract

An ab initio MO approach has been used to study the structure of the open-chain radical C3H3. The results show that only one stable radical of this type exists, a π-delocalised propargylic structure. The reactivity of this radical has been examined on the basis of the calculated optimum geometry and of the spin density distribution.
