The Second National Conference on Education in February was held under the auspices of the School of Forestry of Yale University at New Haven, Connecticut on December 17 and 18, 1920. Its purpose was to discuss the question: To what extent and in what ways is it desirable to revise the standardized curriculum of instruction in forestry that for the past 10 years has been more or less closely followed by the leading forest, schools of the United States? That curriculum was the outcome of the First National Conference on Education in Forestry, held in December, 1909, when was appointed a committee on standardization of instruction in forestry that published its final report in the Forestry Quarterly for September, 1912 (Vol. X, No. 3). The second conference on professional forestry education was called by Dean Toumey of the Yale School of Forestry, after consultation with other foresters engaged in educational work. Those in attendance represented, personally or by proxy, all the forest schools in the country that offer courses leading to a forestry degree, or that otherwise train men for the practice of forestry as a profession. Through the courtesy of the United States Commissioner of Education the proceedings of the conference are made of permanent record in this bulletin, the conference having very gladly accepted the commissioner's offer to incorporate this material in a publication of the Bureau of Education. Interest in agricultural education continues to increase. The attempt to teach agriculture is no longer confined to the agricultural college and special agricultural school. Methods of teaching the most important facts and the elementary principles of agriculture are discussed in the meetings of most of our educational associations. There is a large demand from teachers and school officers for any printed matter on this subject that will help them in determining what to teach, and how to teach it, and how to organize schools and adjust courses of study so as to get the best results from the new studies without losing the best in the old. This bulletin consists of papers read before the American Association for the Advancement of Agricultural Teaching at its third annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, November 12, 1912. The papers presented in this bulletin are as follows: (1) The opportunity and responsibility for the preparation of teachers of agriculture (a) by agricultural colleges in their regular courses and classes (H. L. Rusell), (b) by agricultural colleges in special courses and classes organized for this work (Kenyon L. Butterfield); (2) The first year's work in agriculture in the high school (W. G. Hummel); (3) What relation should exist between the experiment stations and the secondary schools of agriculture (A. A. Soule); and (4) The use of land in connection with agricultural teaching (a) in special agricultural schools (C. G. Selvig), (b) in high schools (Rufus W. Stimson), (c) in elementary schools. Throughout the centuries there have appeared from time to time individuals who have merited designation as great educational leaders. Nearly every country lays claim to a few whose thought and action have been responsible in the main for its spiritual and cultural growth. The United States is no exception in this respect for it lays claim to an unusual group of men and women whose influence long will be felt in behalf of the educational advancement of the nation. Among these, not the least was William T. Harris, the fourth Commissioner of Education of the United States of America. This year 1835 marks the time of the birth of Harris. Harris, a philosopher of high order, was, perhaps as much as any man, the creator of the modern public-school system. With a great endowment of mind he gave a type of leadership to education which scarcely has been surpassed in this country. The life of William T. Harris is full of inspiration for the scholar and administrator. In many respects his contributions were not spectacular. This was doubtless natural, because the forces with which he worked were to a large extent hidden. Yet it was because of the power and the depth of his thought, the breadth of his view, and the long continuity of purpose that enabled his work to be so lasting in influence. The Association of Urban Universities held its second conference in Cincinnati, November 15-17, 1915. The program, focusing on a consideration of training for public service, had three subdivisions: (1) the needs for cooperation between the university and the city governments in providing training for public service; (2) methods of training; and (3) the results of cooperative training. This bulletin provides abridged forms of some of the papers read at the conference. It also includes welcoming remarks by the city's Mayor and responses by the chancellors of the University of Buffalo and the University of Toronto; and supplementary reports of six typical urban universities: Municipal University of Akron; Brown University; University of Denver; The University of Minnesota; Syracuse University; and Western Reserve University. During an investigation made to determine to what extent teachers in the United States had organized teachers' associations previous to the forming of the National Education Association, the American Lyceum was found to be the first educational institution, of which teachers were a part, having a program calculated to improve the educational status of the Nation. The term "American lyceum" is used to designate the lyceum system as a whole. The system was composed of town, county, State, and national lyceums. Except for the town lyceums, the system was organized by representation, county, State, and national lyceums each being formed by delegates from the next smaller group. The name applies to the system, but the town or local lyceums were the fundamental divisions of the organization. This bulletin is presented in two parts: (1) the history of the lyceum, and (2) its contribution to the advancement of public education. Details of the lyceum's beginning, growth, and activity are given in the history, while part two consists of evidence indicating its contribution.
