H. W. Smith writes to Congressman John Jolley on January 18, 1892. Smith begins by congratulating Jolley on his recent appointment as one of South Dakota's representatives in Washington D.C. before commenting on changes Smith sees as necessary to avoid the country's collapse. He writes that while he expects the issues of transportation and finance are on Jolley's agenda the "few Eastern men [who] control the Republican Party" will make it "impossible ... to carry out the wishes of your [Jolley's] constituents." Smith continues, commenting that the "social condition" in America is at a point where it threatens the republic itself. Smith concludes that the Republican party should be terminated. He ends the letter by stating that while he lost to Jolley in the election he holds no bitterness towards him., This item is from the John L.
