The purpose of this study was to determine which environmental factors influence the performance (especially mobility rate) of the Quartermaster-equipped soldier in the tropics. The method was for an environmental observer to accompany troops on three types of operational exercises (reconnaissance and combat patrols and raid exercises) during both wet and dry seasons at Fort Sherman, Canal Zone. Data were recorded showing: weather, movement, terrain, surface conditions and vegetation at regular intervals. Tables are presented summarizing climatic conditions, terrain and mobility rates. Maps and route profiles show vegetation types and surface geology. The results of the reconnaissance and combat patrols are not such that they could be generalized on or explained by the environment. However, in the raid operations significant differences were found between the data for the two seasons. The slower mobility rate of the wet season is attributed to: (1) the prevalence of mud (the greatest hindrance to movement), (2) the debilitating effects of high humidity (the most significant environmental factor affecting comfort) and (3) a lower visibility than in the dry season. Other factors, significant in both seasons are: frequency of obstacles (streams, gullies and deadfalls), and dense stands of vegetation., Limited number of copies containing color other than black and white are available until stock is exhausted. This document constitutes the final technical report on the 'Modification to Math Model for SIAF Small Independent Action Forces program. The principal product of this program was a revision to a computerized simulation model of a SIAF operating in both reconnaissances and combat modes. The SIAF simulation model is provided as computer software installed on CDC 6500 computer at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and additions to and replacements for a six-volume User's Manual as follows: Volume I-Model Description and Programming Guide (This Final Report serves as a forward to Volume I).

This volume contains the listings of the subroutines in the Small Independent Action Forces (SIAF) System Model. The listings are ordered according to their locations in the overlays. The Small Independent Action Forces (SIAF) System Model User's Manual consists of six volumes. This fifth volume presents detailed information concerning the SIAF initialization routines. This includes the decision logic which selects a combat mode, movement objective points, and deployment points; and optimization logic which optimizes the decision logic selection process. Included in each subroutine description are sections on purpose of the subroutine, a general description, a definition of variables, a detailed flow chart, and programming information., See also Volume 6, AD/a-000 109.

The Small Independent Action Forces (SIAF) System Model User's Manual consists of six volumes. This sixth volume presents detailed information concerning the SIAF combat execution subroutines. This includes a description of the Fire Control and Lethality Model as well as the combat executive routine, and routines pertaining to movement, formations, detection, firing rate, firing options, ammunition consumption, weapon substitution, break contact, withdrawal, and continue the mission. Included in each subroutine description are sections covering the purpose of the subroutine, a general description, a definition of variables, a detailed flow chart, and programming information., See also Volume 5, AD/a-000 108.

The Small Independent Action Forces (SIAF) System Model User's Manual consists of six volumes. Volume I provides the information necessary to actually operate the model on the computer while Volumes II, III, V, and VI provide the more detailed analysis and discussion of the subroutines. Volumes II and III contain the reconnaissance routines. This second volume presents detailed information concerning the terrain, weather, and target subroutines. This book presents in brief graphic form certain ideas for engaging the Japanese in combat which have been developed as a result of Allied Nations experience in all theaters. Details of operation are not given since they are invariably modified by circumstances and must be determined by the commander on the ground. Our normal tactics while fundamentally sound must be adapted to meet the Japanese methods of warfare and to fully exploit their weaknesses in doctrine, psychology, weapons, and equipment. The text has been printed in two languages to permit its use by both American and Chinese forces in the Far East. The close study of the tactics presented in this document is recommended for their application when the situation favors their adoption. -Joseph W. Stilwell. The object of this pamphlet, which is based on a pamphlet written in India, is to assist commanders in training their units to fight in jungles. It contains much of the available information that has been gained from experience in recent operations in South-East Asia, and it gives lessons which have been learned sometimes at a great price. In principle there is nothing new in jungle warfare, but the environment of the jungle is new to many of our troops. Special training is therefore necessary to accustom them to jungle conditions and to teach them jungle methods. While the pamphlet has been written primarily for troops likely to fight the Japanese, its teaching will apply to fighting against any organized enemy, armed with modern weapons, in jungle country.
