Presented are five procedures which permit the effective teaching of chromatography with equipment which is readily available, economical, and simple in design. The first procedure involves a study of solute partition in two immiscible solvents and of countercurrent distribution. The second illustrates the use of unidimensional ascending paper chromatography in separating the same mixture of colored components used in the first procedure. The third procedure illustrates the separation of three common sugars by unidimensional ascending paper chromatography. The fourth procedure demonstrates the separation of amino acids by ascending two-dimensional paper chromatography. The fifth procedure involves the separation of a dye mixture using thin-layer chromatography. (DS)

Reported upon in this research study is the development of two automated chromatographs equipped with flame photometric detectors for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of both low- and high-molecular weight sulfur compounds in kraft mill effluents. In addition the study sought to determine the relationship between total gaseous sulfur and the individual sulfur compounds observed chromatographically. The report, together with tables and diagrams, was presented at the 12th Conference on Methods in Air Pollution and Industrial Hygiene Studies, University of Southern California, April, 1971. (BL)

These materials, including teacher's guide, student test booklet and laboratory guide, student workbook, test booklet, and a booklet explaining the answers to the questions in the test booklet, are first trial versions of a unit that will form part of the Australian Science Education Project instructional materials for grades seven through ten. The emphasis is on student investigation of simple phenomena, leading to the development and application of a model of particulate adhesion and cohesion. There is a short core portion all students are expected to complete, and nine options from which students may choose. Topics investigated include: wetting, capillarity, adhesives, detergents, lubrication, strength of soap films, viscosity, monomolecular layers, and chromatography. The teacher's guide contains suggestions for organization of the unit, a bibliography and film list, equipment list, and notes on the activities suggested in the student's manual as well as ideas for additional activities that may be added or substituted. This volume is the first in a series of the ACS "Modern Chemical Technology" (ChemTeC) curriculum which is to prepare chemical technicians. The chapters concentrate on gas chromatography, tests for purity, properties of gases, and gas measurements. Included is the appropriate content, exercises, laboratory activities, and all needed mathematics. The mathematics assumes a mastery of algebra. Revision is expected after use in pilot projects.
