Photosynthesis and respiration of 4 species of the marine red algal genus Polysiphonia were evaluated under a variety of light, temperature and salinity conditions. The manometric results were compared with the local distribution and abundance of each species. The species can be separated into two distinct categories based on their overall distribution and temperature optima: (1) cold water plants [P. lanosa (L.) Tandy and P. elongata (Hudson) Sprengel], with peak photosynthesis at 21° to 24°C, but with active photosynthesis as low as 5°C; (2) plants with warm-water affinities [P. nigrescens (Hudson) Greville and P. subtilissima Montagne], having photosynthetic optima at 27° to 30°C, and exhibiting little or no photosynthesis below 10°C. The plants from the first group exhibit thermal injury at temperatures of 25°C and show a narrow tolerance to low salinities during periods of high temperatures. The plants from the second group show thermal injury at 30°C and have a wider tolerance to low salinities. The horizontal distribution of the 4 Polysiphonia species within the Great Bay Estuary System of New Hampshire, USA, is primarily governed by their tolerances to high temperatures and low salinities. The temperature optimum for each of the species corresponds to its particular estuarine distribution. Thus, P. subtilissima, having the highest temperature optimum, penetrated furthest into the Estuary, while P. lanosa, having the lowest temperature optimum, was restricted to the more coastal stations. There was a good correspondence between the natural distribution patterns and the manometric results.

An analysis and discussion of two mechanisms of apical cell division in filaments of Pleonosporium squarrulosum (Harvey) Abbott (Ceramiales) is given. It is suggested that the alternate, oblique orientation of cross-wall formation during sequential divisions of apical cells of filaments of unlimited growth is characteristic of actively growing axes and is involved in determining the alternate branching pattern of the thallus. A second method of apical cell division, namely, that resulting in the formation of horizontal crosswalls, is frequently characteristic of filaments that have become limited in growth. The rates of division of apical cells of main axes of regenerates were determined under light intensities ranging from 269–1614 lx and light periods of 16L-8D and 8L-16D. Rates of division were found to be highly affected by both light intensity and light period, and a significant interaction between the two was demonstrated. The effects of light period are interpreted as acting by increasing or decreasing the duration of exposure to illumination rather than as a ‘trigger’ effect. A method of presenting a summary of the effects of light period and light intensity is to express the data in terms of Mean Daily Illuminance (MDI = illumination (lux) × day − length (h)/24 h). Analysis of the data as MDI show that the rate of division of apical cells increased with increasing MDI up to a value of 538 MDI.

Membranoptera multiramosa Gardner was maintained in unialgal culture and was observed to have a life history involving alternation of isomorphic generations typical of the higher Florideophycidae. Although existing reports state that members of the Delesseriaceae are always dioecious, this cultured material was found to be monoecious.

Summary (i) The need for a considerable extension of morphological and cytological work in the Florideae is pointed out. (2) Before proceeding to the survey current terminology is reviewed; some terms are discarded and definitions are given for those retained. The survey shows that our cytological knowledge is limited almost entirely to two of the six orders, the Nemalionales and Ceramiales. Members of the Nemalionales show great variety as regards the somatic phase sequence in the life history. Species investigated cytologically, to varying degrees of detail, are all of the Nemalion type, that is, two morphologically dissimilar haploid phases separated by a very short diplophase of the nucleus. The Gelidiales have been completely neglected, and apart from Corallina officinalis var. mediterranea so have the Cryptonemiales. In this latter order there are indications of ‘atypical’ phase sequence. This is also true of the Gigartinales which include in addition forms showing the Phyllophora Brodiaei type of life history, i.e. two morphologically dissimilar phases, one a gametophyte and the other a tetrasporic nemathecium developed from the auxiliary cell. The nuclear phase sequence is unknown. Information about the nuclear history in the Rhodymeniales is only sufficient to indicate problems in need of investigation. In the Ceramiales the Polysiphonia type of life history with three somatic phases (two morphologically similar) and two nuclear phases appears to be general, and detailed accounts of such exist for several species. Other types are known and representatives have been investigated: Spermothamnion Turneri has been shown to be cytologically polyphasic and to be characterized by the formation of functional sexual organs on the diploid; the polysporangium of S. Snyderae has been shown to be a compound tetrasporangium, and Plumaria elegans has been found to have three nuclear phases, the triploid bearing a special type of sporangium. In addition, some species show unusual somatic phases sequences, the nuclear phases being unknown. (3) Three lines of cytological research are envisaged associated with ecological and physiological investigations. (4) There is a striking absence of physiological concepts concerning the Florideae and hence the need for pure culture and general physiological investigations. I wish to express my thanks to Prof. C. W. Wardlaw for his stimulating interest and help in the preparation of this article, and also to the Council of the University of Manchester for library facilities. Thanks are also due to Mr E. Ashby for his help in the production of the figures. Owing to war-time restrictions direct copying of previously published figures has not been possible. Instead they have been photographed and magnified considerably in order that the photographic image could be meticulously picked out in Indian ink. Subsequently the diagram was cleared by bleaching and reduced to its original size. I trust that faithful copies of the originals, as published, have thus been obtained.

Recent collections of fertile plants of Warrenia comosa (Harvey) Kuetzing from the coasts of South Australia and Tasmania have made possible detailed studies of its morphology, reproduction, and relationships. Warrenia comosa is here recognized phylogenetically as probably the most primitive known species of the Ceramiaceae (Ceramiales, Rhodophyta) in the tribe Warrenieae Schmitz.

The tribe Amansieae, including the genus Lenormandia, is characterized by the presence of the pigment floridorubin. Two species of Lenormandia do not contain floridorubin and their morphological characteristics are distinct. L. coronata Lindauer et Setchell is transferred to the Chondrieae as Cladhymenia coronata (Lindauer et Setchell) Saenger. L. allanii Lindauer shows an affinity to both Sonderella linearis (Harvey) Schmitz and the Sarcomenieae, and is transferred to the new genus Lembergia, as Lembergia allanii (Lindauer) Saenger.

The present system of classifying the Florideophycidae into orders is mainly based on the early stages in the development of the gonimoblast (carposporophyte) whether it develops from the fertilized carpogonium or from a generative auxiliary cell; if the latter, the position of the auxiliary cell and the method and time of its formation (before or after fertilization). With the exception of a few seemingly intermediate types (as should be expected in any phylogenetically related group of organisms), the genera that have been studied are referable to fairly clear-cut orders. Arguments are presented here for recognition of the following six orders: Nemalionales, Gelidiales, Cryptonemiales, Gigartinales, Rhodymeniales, and Ceramiales. The historical developments culminating in the establish ment of these orders have been reviewed by PAPENFUSS (1955, pp. 185 & 186). In the Nemalionales as conceived here, the gonimoblast develops directly from the fertilized carpogonium, from a daughter cell of the fertilized carpogonium, or from the hypogynous cell. Three orders which since 1942 have been segregated from the Nemalionales demand special consideration. FELDMANN (1953, see also 1962) has erected the order Acrochaetiales for the Acrochaetiaceae and the Audouinellaceae (a family which he established in 1962 for Grania, Audouinella, and Rhodochorton, all previously placed in the Acrochaetiaceae). This order was separated from the Nemalionales on the basis of the absence of a differentiated

In the Rhodophyceae the fertilized egg never separates from the motherplant but remains in intimate connection with it and by continued growth develops into a so-called gonimoblast. The gonimoblast generates a great many spores (carpospores) which disseminate in the water and give rise to new individuals. The gonimoblast receives practically all its nourishment from the motherplant and a great variety of organs are developed among the Florideae in order to facilitate supply of food to the gonimoblast. For classification of red algae those organs are very important and in a study of the lines of phylogenetical development in the Florideae it is essential to determine carefully the origin and structure of food-supplying organs. Schmitz (22) early pointed out that sporogenous filaments of the Rhodophyceae connect themselves with nutritive cells in the motherplant and he calls these auxiliary cells. Later on Kylin (13) called attention to the fact that there are different kinds of auxiliary cells: those which are only nutritive cells and those which serve both as food-suppliers and as starting-points of the gonimoblasts. Kylin (14) calls the latter typical auxiliary cells. Typical auxiliary cells are found in the orders Cryptonemiales, Gigartinales, Rhodymeniales and Ceramiales, while in the orders Nemalionales and Gelidiales typical auxiliary cells do not occur but only various nutritive ones are found. As a characteristic feature of the Nemalionales it can be pointed out that all food which the motherplant gives to the growing gonimoblast goes through the carpogonial branch. In the Nemalionales the gonimoblast is connected with the motherplant only by the carpogonial branch (concerning one exception see further on). The gonimoblast develops directly from the fertilized cargogonium (concerning one exception see further on). As to development of the gonimoblast in the Nemalionales the following examples will be presented. In Batrachospermum the carpogonium, when fertilized, produces a number of filaments 138

Tetrasporophytes of Callithamnion roseum Harvey were cultured in a synthetic sea water medium. Their developmental morphology was found to be identical with the morphology of regenerates of the same species. A change in cell type, from parallel cross-walled to oblique cross-walled cells occurs during differentiation of the tetrasporophytes. Apices of differentiating tetrasporophytes extend along sigmoid curves. Branches develop from oblique cross-walled cells of the tetrasporophytes.

Polysiphonia hemisphaerica Aresch. from Scandinavia and Polysiphonia boldii Wynne et Edwards from the Texas coast of the Gulf of Mexico were studied in culture. Cross-fertilization between the two entities results in carposporophyte development and carpospore release. Carpospores germinate into tetrasporophytes which produce tetrasporangia. The products of meiosis, i.e. tetraspores, have a greatly reduced viability compared with tetraspores derived from intraspecific crosses. It is proposed to retain a varietal status for the Texas entity: P. hemisphaerica var. boldii (Wynne et Edwards) stat. nov.
