- Abstract
Dr Henry Norman Burgess Wettenhall AM was a paediatric endocrinologist and amateur ornithologist. Born in 1915 in London he immigrated to Australia with his family attending school in Geelong before graduating with Honours in Medicine at the University of Melbourne. Following wartime service with the Royal Australian Navy, he began work at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, an association that lasted decades. Concurrent with this Wettenhall was an indefatigable philanthropist raising millions of dollars for a wide range of causes and societies including the Victorian Conservation Trust, Museum Victoria and the Heide Park and Art Gallery. A keen ornithologist since childhood, he was a long-time member of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (now renamed Birds Australia) serving as president from 1977 to 1983. Later made a fellow of the organization, Wettenhall played an instrumental role in numerous projects and publications. In 1997 the Norman Wettenhall Foundation was established to further Wettenhall's philanthropic and environmental goals.
