Abstract

The effective cross section for the production of Na23 in the reaction Al27(p,3p2n)Na23 at 155 Mev was determined by mass spectrometry. Pure Al samples were irradiated and subjected to processes to fix the Na, which was extracted and placed on the thermionic emission filament of the spectrometer. From relations between the ratio of the number of Na22 and Na23 atoms, the mass of the sample. Na22 activity, and the ratio of Na22 and Na23 cross sections, the cross section for Na22 production was found to be about 23 mb. (D.C.W)
