Acute hemorrhagic cystitis (AHC) characterized by gross hematuria and symptoms of bladder inflammation occurs in children as a self-limited disease that must be differentiated from serious renal disorders. Of 69 children with AHC, adenovirus type 11 was recovered from the urine of ten, and adenovirus type 21 from the urine of two. Two of 42 control children also had adenovirus type 11 viruria. An increase in adenovirus type 11 neutralizing antibody was detected in four of four AHC patients with adenovirus 11 viruria, in one of five children with bacteriuria, and in one of 19 children from whom no agent was recovered. Twelve patients had Escherichia coli bacteriuria. Bacteria were not isolated from the urine of 18 control patients. Overall, adenovirus or E coli infections were detected in 39% of AHC cases.

The rates of charge transfer of evaporating droplets of radius less than 5 microns have been measured by means of a Millikan Oil Drop apparatus. As the evaporation proceeds, droplets of pure liquids seem to retain their charge at a near constant level, but droplets of liquid dispersions containing some immiscible substances steadily loose charge and droplets of salt solutions gain charge in the first stage of evaporation before they become stabilized. The gain in electric charge observed in solution droplets is attributed to the fact that the positive ions tend to evaporate into the medium in preference to the negative ions as shown by results obtained for droplets containing various salts, such as ammonium chloride, calcium chloride, and aluminum chloride.

To determine whether adenovirus type 11 strains recovered from urine of children with acute hemorrhagic cystitis differed antigenically from the prototype strain, these strains were examined by cross HI tests. Four adenovirus type 11 strains (Dean, Scott, Heard, and Briggs) isolated from urine and the prototype Slobitski strain were tested. Reaction times of virus with antibody varied between 4 min and 21 hr. At the shortest reaction time, strain differences were most pronounced. The Scott and Briggs urine strains showed less resemblance to the Slobitski strain and other urine strains. At longer reaction times, titer differences disappeared. Except for these differences, which were not marked, the adenovirus type 11 strains from urine appeared antigenically similar to the prototype strain.
