The artistic surgical anatomy of the external ear is delicate and difficult to duplicate. The Cronin Silicone rubber (Silastic) otoplasty prosthesis for subcutaneous implantation allows a good cosmetic result in two stages. A not infrequent complication is exposure of the silicone rubber frame. The exposed silicone rubber should be trimmed and immediately covered with a local flap. Our series consists of nine ears with congenital microtia. Seven ears had a satisfactory result. The other two patients required removal of the implant secondary to self-induced trauma. The technique is recommended for selective clinical application.

ETHACRYNIC acid is a potent new diuretic which causes sodium and potassium excretion. It is especially useful in patients with refractory edema, cardiac decompensation, hepatic cirrhosis, and renal disease. Side effects such as gastrointestinal symptoms, hypoglycemia, and hyperuricemia, are not unusual. A granulocytosis and neutropenia have been reported. Recently Maher and Schreiner,1 and Schneider and Becker2 have reported transient hearing loss following the administration of ethacrynic acid in humans. A cysteine derivative of ethacrynic acid was withdrawn from clinical use because of high incidence of transient hearing loss. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of hearing loss and describe the pathology following the administration of ethacrynic acid. REPORT OF A CASE The patient was a 53-year-old woman who was hospitalized with hepatic cirrhosis, acute renal failure, and esophageal varices. EACH YEAR an enormous amount of information has been contributed to the literature regarding viral disease. The cause of the "common cold" now could be one of several score of viruses, from several morphologically different groups.1 Since many of these same viruses which usually have been associated with benign disease can at times be extremely virulent, through central nervous system infection2,3 it is not surprising that when viremia does occur the inner ear can be involved in a pathologic process.In spite of this, our knowledge of the histopathology of viral labyrinthitis in the adult is extremely limited. The purpose of this paper is to present two cases of sensorineural deafness, one of which began in association with an upper respiratory infection probably of viral origin, the second showed similar course and histopathological findings but lacked a definite history of association with an upper respiratory infection. CASES of congenital deafness which appear to be based on developmental defects of the internal ear have been grouped into four main types. These have been named after the investigators who described the essential pathologic changes and have been extensively discussed by Ormerod1; therefore they need be only briefly listed here: (1) Michel type, complete lack of development of the inner ear; (2) Mondini-Alexander type, development of only a single curved tube or a flattened and shortened cochlea with bony abnormalities which is coupled with an enlarged saccule and endolymphatic sac; (3) Bing-Seibenman type, normal bony labyrinth with a lack of development of both the pars inferior and superior membranous structures; (4) Scheibe type, normal bony labyrinth with malformation limited to the pars inferior (the cochleosaccular type). Carcinoma of the mastoid is infrequent in the general population.1-5 In the selected population of radium-dial painters and patients treated three or four decades ago with radium water or radium-like salts the incidence is markedly increased.During recent years over 300 patients with radium poisoning were followed at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Argonne National Laboratories.* Eight of these patients developed carcinoma of the mastoid, and six have died because of their tumor.6 At necropsy the temporal bones of two of these patients were removed, placed in 10% formalin, and submitted to the Temporal Bone Bank for processing.
