627 - Abstract
Model experiments on the preliminary design of a section of pipeline for the Glen Shira hydroelectric scheme showed that under certain conditions air was entrained by a stream of water and carried into the main pipeline. Although the design was altered to overcome this, these experiments emphasised the need for further knowledge of the behaviour of such systems. Information was lacking regarding the proper scaling laws to use, the possibility of predicting behaviour of a prototype from model tests in such cases and the mechanism whereby air is entrained at a free surface. An investigation into the more fundamental aspects of the problem was therefore made and forms the subject of this thesis. The experiments were also designed to supply data which would be useful in the design of hydraulic compressors, devices which depend for their functioning on air entrainment. A technique had to be developed whereby air was entrained by a jet of water striking a free surface and subsequently collected and measured, and the experimental difficulties encountered are described. In the method finally evolved, jets of water from nozzles of various sizes (.0353 inch to .1497 inch diameter) were directed vertically into water in a receiver into which was also led a secondary flow of sufficient magnitude to carry the entrained air into a separator. After separation from the water, the air was measured by a gas flow-meter. A series of experiments was also made to investigate the possibility of increasing the quantity of air entrained, this being of importance for the design of hydraulic compressors. The results of the experiments are analysed and discussed. A comparison is made with the results of Shirley who, in a thesis to the State University of Iowa, has given the only known comparable data. Allowing for the experimental difficulties, the difference in method and range of jet sizes used, reasonably good agreement is recorded. The results show that the Froude Number alone is not the correct similarity criterion if the start of air entrainment is of importance. For the smaller jets, the entrainment starts at a critical value of Weber Number. The quantity of air entrained depends most closely on Reynolds Number. When plotted on a base of d2V2 (where d = jet diameter and V = jet velocity) both the results of Shirley and those of the writer lie scattered about a mean straight line. This curve and others included in the thesis enable estimates to be made of the quantity of air likely to be entrained toy jets working under given conditions. The supplementary experiments showed that simple circular jets are "best for a hydraulic compressor. The data collected would therefore be applicable to the design of such a machine. For model experiments, such as those mentioned at the beginning, the experiments indicated that different similarity criteria are required depending on whether conditions at the start of entrainment or the quantity of air entrained is the major concern. Both cannot be simulated simultaneously in one model.

Photosynthetic production by phytoplankton was studied in two Ethiopian soda lakes, alkalinity 51–67 m-equiv./l, with abundant blue-green algae. The deeper lake, L. Aranguadi, contained extremely dense crops composed almost entirely of Spirulina (Oscillatoria, Arthrospira) platensis. Measurements of the spectral attenuation of light showed that the most penetrating component was displaced to the red spectral region, and estimates of the chlorophyll a content in unit area of the euphotic zone were often similar to the highest values (∼200–300 mg/m²) expected on theoretical grounds. The vertical distribution of photosynthetic activity per unit water volume was of a typical pattern for phytoplankton, with light-inhibition often present, although the euphotic zones did not exceed 0.6 m in depth. From these profiles, computed rates of gross photosynthesis per unit area of lake surface reached a magnitude of 1.4–2.4 g O
2 /m²⋅h in both lakes. They were obviously severely limited by self-shading behaviour in the algal populations. An appreciable inverse relationship between photosynthetic capacity and population density was only found in the densest populations of L. Aranguadi, with chlorophyll a content >2000 mg/m³, where depressed rates might result from experimental artefacts in closed bottles. In this lake, two independent estimates of gross production, based on the analysis of diurnal changes in the open water, were as high as 43 and 57 g O2 /m²⋅ day. Diurnal changes of stratification in the two lakes are described and related to the controlling temperature (density) stratification. They include occasionally complete nocturnal deoxygenation in the deeper lake, evidence of heavy respiratory uptake. The high photosynthetic productivity is interpreted as dependent upon the coupling of high algal contents in the euphotic zone (ΣB) with high values of photosynthetic capacity (φmax ). It is probably favoured by the tropical situation affecting temperature and illumination, by a surplus of dissolved inorganic phosphate, and especially by the considerable reserves of carbon dioxide in these soda lakes. 44. LIPID COMPOSITION OF MESOPHILIC AND PSYCHROPHILIC YEASTS (CANDIDA SPECIES) AS INFLUENCED BY ENVIRONMENTAL TEMPERATURE

- Abstract
The lipids of three psychrophilic yeasts of the genus Candida, grown at 10°, were compared with those of a mesophilic yeast (Candida lipolytica) grown at 25° and at 10°. All the yeasts examined had similar contents of total lipids and of phosphatides, and similar phosphatide and neutral lipid compositions. However, the total fatty acids of the psychrophiles and of the mesophile grown at 10° had much higher proportions of linoleic acid and lower proportions of oleic acid than those of the mesophilic yeast grown at 25°; the psychrophilic yeasts also contained linolenic acid, not detected in the mesophilic yeast. The fatty acid composition of the psychrophilic yeast remained fairly constant during its growth cycle, but that of the mesophilic yeast at 10° showed marked changes in the proportions of oleic and linoleic acids in the early stages of growth; similar changes occurred in the mesophile grown at 25°, but at much faster rates. On the basis of these observations and others it is concluded that in the early stages of growth of the mesophile at 25° and 10°, oleic acid is converted rapidly to linoleic, which is then oxidatively metabolized during the later stages of active growth. The higher proportions of linoleic acid in the mesophile grown at 10° could be accounted for by a slower rate of metabolism of linoleic acid during the later stages of growth at the lower temperature.

- Abstract
The fungistatic activities of certain compounds structurally related to salicylanilide suggest the possible involvement of hydrogen bonding of the anilide hydrogen atom and chelation by the phenolic and amidic oxygen atoms with an enzyme(s)/enzyme system of the fungus. The inhibition of enzymes has been followed through the development of specific color reactions on salicylanilide assay plates. The participation of sulphydryl groups in the mechanism of action is suggested by these tests.

48. THE GLYCEROL DEHYDROGENASES OF PSEUDOMONAS SALINARIA, VIBRIO COSTICOLUS, AND ESCHERICHIA COLIIN RELATION TO BACTERIAL HALOPHILISM
- Author

Baxter, R. M. and Gibbons, N. E.
- Abstract
Glycerol dehydrogenases from the extremely halophilic Pseudomonas salinariaand the moderately halophilic Vibrio costicolusare described and compared with the corresponding enzyme from the nonhalophilic Escherichia coli. The properties of all three enzymes are similar except their responses to salt concentration. The enzymes from E. coliand V. costicolusare most active at sodium chloride concentrations of about 0.25 Mand 0.5 Mrespectively; that from P. salinariais not only most active in the presence of 1.5 MNaCl but is irreversibly inactivated in the absence of salt. All three enzymes are more active in the presence of potassium chloride than of sodium chloride at any given molar concentration. These results suggest that the extremely halophilic bacteria contain high concentrations of salt and that their enzymes function maximally at these high concentrations. In contrast the moderately halophilic organisms contain relatively little salt and their enzymes are more comparable with those of nonhalophiles.

- Abstract
The study conducts a critical evaluation of the Southern Flank members of NATO (Italy, Greece, and Turkey), to include the political, cultural, and economic stability of each, as well as the capability of their armed forces to contribute to the NATO mission, and within this context, to assess the NATO mid-range strategy for the 'Southern Region.' A brief assessment was also made of the entire Mediterranean littoral as well as other factors that might influence the mid-range strategy, e.g., the Arab-Israeli conflict, MBFR, etc.

50. Air entrainment by fluid jets and streams
- Author

Baxter, Allan M
