1. A Guide to the Instruments Developed for Evaluation of In-Service Institutes.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to provide summary data relative to the instruments developed for analysis of in-service institutes. This paper initiates a slightly different form of offering instruments for use by others. Rather than presenting a finished instrument with only summary data provided and all of the subjective decisions made, the reader is given the opportunity to make his own decisions and, using basic data which must be requested from the publisher, to develop his own instruments. The developed instruments may also be requested, along with summary data such as factor loadings, reliability, standard error of measurement and indications of needs. The development and application of the instruments is described, but content of the instruments is not provided in this paper. (Author/PR)

Glass pipette microcolumns filled with finely sieved adsorbents permit capillary attraction and separation in 3 to 15 minutes. Technique is adaptable to gas chromatography.

33. A search for porphyrin biomarkers in Nonesuch Shale and extraterrestrial samples.

Abstract

An organic solvent extract of billion year old Nonesuch Shale was examined for porphyrins by means of fluorometry and high resolution mass spectrometry. It appears to contain at least three or more classes of porphyrins, one similar to tetraphenyl porphin and the others more complex. Many are apparently chelated with copper, nickel, zinc, iron and vanadyl and are highly aromatic. We have also examined the extracts of Apollo 11, 12 and 14 surface fines for porphyrins by spectrophotofluorometry, but we found none.

Abstract

Apollo 11, 12, and 14 lunar surface fines were examined for the presence of porphyrins by a sensitive fluorescent technique. The returned lunar samples studied were of bulk fines collected from the Sea of Tranquillity by Apollo 11, from the Ocean of Storms by Apollo 12, and from the nonmare Fra Mauro formation by Apollo 14. It was found that no porphyrins are present in lunar surface fines which have been extensively irradiated and sorted.

Abstract

The carotenoid pigments of surficial algal mat communities of a California absolute subtropical desert were isolated and characterized principally by means of high resolution mass spectrometry. The pigments were all oxidized keto-types, predominantly canthaxanthin, its isomers, and echinone. The carotenoid pattern suggests that the mats represent an old climax ecosystem in which the algal cells at the time of collection were starved for nitrogen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

42. Fatty Acids and Polar Lipids of Extremely Thermophilic Filamentous Bacterial Masses from Two Yellowstone Hot Springs

Abstract

The fatty acid composition of filamentous bacterial masses from two very hot Yellowstone Park springs is not unusual despite the extreme environment. Both populations have a series of C14to C20straight-chain acids with a maximum at C18, and a series of saturated iso acids with a maximum at C17in one case and C19in the other. The fatty acid pattern of this anomalous group of organisms is like that of bacteria but not of blue-green algae. Both populations have similar polar lipids and identical carotenoids. It is speculated that these organisms may be adapted to their high-temperature environment by means of stable lipoprotein membrane systems.

Abstract

Two problem areas of the AC-130E gunships were investigated and corrected during deployment to Southeast Asia. Modification were to the AAD-7 (forward looking infra-red sensor) tracking control system. These modifications improved the tracking ability of the sensor operator and reduced an undesirable vertical jitter. Modification was also made to the fire control computer program. New equations were programmed to better inhibit firing the guns during high aircraft attitude rates. These high rates would often cause large misses of the ordnance with respect to the target.

Abstract

The present approach guidance scheme is one of controlling the aircraft's velocity vector; however, this scheme has two major disadvantages: it's a difficult flying task for the pilot, and when the aircraft arrives tangent to the circular path, a violent maneuver is usually required to achieve the proper bank angle to stay on the desired circular path. An improved method for controlling the side firing AC-130 and AC-119 into circular attack geometry eliminates these disadvantages. Furthermore, with this improved system the bank angle rates never exceed 3 or 4 degrees per second. This control scheme was simulated on the analog computer and the results are presented graphically. The simulation showed that the bank angle, command-control scheme is effective for distances out to five circular orbit radii from the target and is effective for all aircraft headings (with one exception which is discussed in a stability study in the appendix). The initial test flight showed that the bank angle control scheme behaved very well, and its overall performance was near that predicted. Relatively minor modifications can incorporate this control scheme into existing analog computers on board the aircraft.
