The overspeed capability of the large steel flywheels used on light water reactor primary coolant pumps has been evaluated through a combined analytical and experimental effort. Limiting speeds of the prototype flywheel design were calculated for the ductile failure mode using the principles of Section III of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and for the brittle fracture mode using a fracture mechanics approach in which stress intensity factors were determined from finite element computer analysis. The accuracy of the analytical approach was verified by a scale model test program which demonstrates excellent agreement between experiment and analysis. The results of the evaluation are presented in this paper, and they illustrate the kinds of things which can be accomplished through application of modern fracture mechanics technology, including plasticity considerations, to the solution of hardware problems of real engineering interest.

1.1. The respiration rate of different regions of the small intestine of neonatal rat was examined using a direct manometric method.2.2. Everted segments of whole intestinal wall showed a gradient in oxygen uptake decreasing from jejunum to ileum.3.3. After separation of mucosal and muscle layers the gradient was found to be predominantly associated with the activity of the mucosal layer.4.4. The regional variation in oxygen uptake was correlated with a variation in the number of mucosal cell mitochondria, and different levels of succinic activity along the intestine.

In a series of publications we have described the kinetics of free-radical formation from molybdenum carbonyl in association with organic halides in a number of electron-donating solvents. Radical formation involves the displacement of carbon monoxide from the carbonyl by the solvent or vinyl monomer in a rate-determining process giving rise to complexes of the type Mo (CO)5L (where L represents the solvent or monomer) which then react directly with the halide. This paper describes a study of the behaviour of Mo (CO)5Py in association with organic halides in methyl methacrylate solution. The results show that Mo (CO)5Py does not react directly with the halide but first undergoes activation by reaction with monomer, mainly with displacement of pyridine. The relative reactivities of complexes of the type Mo (CO)5L are discussed.

Physiologic response patterns during infusions of epinephrine and norepinephrine were examined with regard to their relationships to those of fear and anger. A similarity was found between responses to fear and epinephrine on the one hand, and to anger and norepinephrine on the other. Experiments were done to compare physiologic response patterns of chronic schizophrenic patients with those of nonschizophrenic subjects during the cold pressor test. The majority of schizophrenic patients reacted with a norepinephrinelike anger pattern, whereas control subjects most often reacted with an epinephrinelike fear pattern. The question was raised whether these patterns may have been present before the onset of schizophrenia and hence could play a diagnostic or etiologic role.

Cellular material, considered sufficient for reliable cytological interpretation, was obtained by prostatic massage from 306 male patients. The strictly cytological results, ranging from class 1 (normal) to class 5 (conclusively positive for carcinoma), were then compared with the combined results of all other available clinical, roentgenographic, and laboratory findings. A false-positive diagnosis of carcinoma occurred only once. In the assembled data of the authors and of previous investigators, false-negative cytodiagnoses have occurred 55 times in 324 cases. Some hard, frankly malignant glands yield insufficient secretion. The authors believe that palpation remains the best means for diagnosing prostatic carcinoma in its early asymptomatic stages, but cytodiagnosis, yielding few false-positive results, is of great corroborative value in the diagnosis of inoperable prostatic cancer.

Operations for spermatoceles and hydroceles can cause considerable postoperative swelling, pain, and bleeding. In search of facts which might help lessen such complications, we have made a detailed study of the surgical anatomy and the histology, cytology, and biochemistry in 5 cases of spermatocele.Spermatoceles are usually found in or near the head of the epididymis. They are regarded1 as retention cysts of the ductuli efferentes or less commonly of the vasa aberrantia. Their histology is consistent with such an origin as is their often multilocular and multiple character.1,2 The finding of normal sperm3 in the vas distal to spermatoceles suggests that these cysts may develop in some ductuli efferentes, while others remain patent.The larger lesions may cause testis atrophy or result in enough bulk and local discomfort to warrant their removal. Volumes as great as 2,490 cc. have been reported.1 Most, however, remain small

Two hundred possums were collected from an area in Westland, New Zealand. Their carcasses were macerated and total fat content was determined by chemical means. The reliability of existing indices (visual, kidney fat, back fat, marrow fat) for predicting the proportion of total fat in the body was investigated. Two indices were developed and tested; one based on fat depots in the mesogastrium, the other based on deviations from a standardized weight for length. The index based on weight deviations gives good results if derived from a large sample of animals, and has the advantage that it can be used on live animals under sedation. The marrow fat index gives good results if fat reserves are low, and the mesogastric index does at other times, when estimates are obtained by autopsy of a few animals. Analysis of variance showed that, within the population studied, time of the year and a season-age interaction were the only significant sources of heterogeneity in fat reserves.

Primary zone wall temperatures have been measured on two aircraft-pattern combustion chambers with a scale ratio of two. Analysis of the heat transfer processes with respect to linear scale and pressure enables trends to be established over a wide range of conditions. It is demonstrated that the established scaling technique—in which pressure is varied inversely as linear scale, and gas temperatures and velocities kept constant—does not give exact similarity in wall temperatures. However, the discrepancy is not very great, and much less than would result from holding pressure constant with varying scale.

The field of human factors is analyzed in an effort to discover its scope and organization. Three orthogonal partitions of the field serve to define eight mutually exclusive, jointly exhaustive, and interdependent sectors. These are considered separately.

In an attempt to provide a framework for the systematic development of crew stations for the military spacecraft of the next decade, the operational and supporting military objectives which might be assigned to such vehicles and the human and technological resources anticipated for the era in question are subjected to analysis. Six elements of space travel are distinguished, and three concrete missions are synthesized of the six elements. It is concluded that it would be a conservative decision to focus the crew station development effort on the needs of an earth-orbit ferry.
