Abstract

SUMMARY Four groups of healthy female patients were anaesthetized with either thiopentone, Althesin or nitrous oxide–oxygen with and without halothane. The concentrations of the plasma electrolytes were measured before and at varying times up to 10 min after the administration of suxamethonium 1 mg\kg. A small, but significant, biphasic increase in plasma potassium concentration was found when suxamethonium was administered to patients in whom anaesthesia was induced with thiopentone, Althesin and nitrous oxide–oxygen. The initial increase in plasma potassium concentration was greater in the Althesin group than in the other two groups. A more delayed, but sustained, increase in plasma potassium concentration was found following induction with nitrous oxide–oxygen–halothane. There were no significant changes in the plasma concentrations of sodium or chloride except in the halothane–nitrous oxide–oxygen series.

Abstract

SUMMARY Medazepam, a new benzodiazepine, was studied as an oral preanaesthetic medication in adult women in a dose of 10 mg, and the findings compared with those obtained with diazepam 10 mg or a dummy capsule using a double-blind technique. In the doses used medazepam produced less drowsiness than diazepam and was no more anxiolytic than the placebo.

Abstract

SUMMARY The influence of modified Type II electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on plasma potassium was studied in 60 patients anaesthetized with a barbiturate and suxamethonium and the finding compared with a "control" group of patients having the same anaesthesia but not ECT. In the ECT series, plasma potassium concentration increased to a maximum 1 min after suxamethonium fasciculations and this increase occurred earlier and was more marked than that observed in the control group. It was also slightly shorter in duration, as was the comparable period of respiratory depression. These findings can be accounted for by the synchronous contraction of muscles containing blood with an increased potassium concentration following suxamethonium.

Abstract

Dimethylselenoxide is fully ionized in disulphuric acid whereas diphenyl selenoxide and its nitro derivatives behave as weak bases. In the case of selenones, alkyl selenones are completely ionized in disulphuric acid, diphenyl selenone and its nitro derivatives behave as weak electrolytes. From the extent of protonation it is observed that selenones are stronger bases than the corresponding sulphones. Amongst the selenides, diphenyl selenide is sulphonated whereas its nitro derivatives behave as weak bases in it.

Abstract

The possibility of utilizing the multifireball expansion and a bare Pomeron at α o =0.85 as an approximation to a solution of the s-channel unitarity equations explicitly connecting 2-body and inelastic phenomenology is discussed. A scale for Pomeron renormalization effects is inferred.
