A study is reported on the prognosis of fractures confined to the alveolar process. The clinical and radiographic findings concern 29 patients with alveolar fractures, involving 71 permanent teeth. The observation period varied from 1 to 12 years (mean 6.5 years). A multivariate analysis was used to study the relationship between postoperative complications, such as pulp necrosis, pulp obliteration, and 18 clinical factors. Pulp necrosis was observed in 75 % of the involved teeth and was found to be significantly related to the time interval from injury to permanent fixation. Pulp oblitera-tion was recorded in 15 % of the involved teeth and was found to be related to the observation period and time interval from injury to permanent fixation. The article reports that the diagnosis of avaseular necrosis of the femoral head cannot be established until a relatively long time after the accident. It cannot be demonstrated roentgenographically until revascularization has commenced and resorption and new formation of bone have occurred, i.e., when the structure of the bone has become irregular or the femoral head is deformed. Dense parts represent areas with broad bone trabeculae, consisting of newly formed bone apposited on the old bony framework. Changes in osseous tissue after injury were studied in monkeys with the use of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical strength measurements. An exponential relationship was found to exist between strength and weight loss for repair tissues 3 to 8 weeks old. Studies of technical variables associated with mandibular-fracture in 60 monkeys have shown fracture union to be dependent on the type of surgical fracture and methods of immobilization.
