A case is reported of cerebellar haemorrhage in a young subject due to a “cryptic” arteriovenous malformation. A close evaluation of the underlying pathology was necessary in order to determine whether the haemorrhage was spontaneous or traumatic. The medicolegal aspects of the case are discussed and emphasis is laid on the primary importance assumed by the post-mortem findings in determining the verdict at the injuiry.

The yellow streaks seen in scirrhous carcinoma of the breast are not the result of necrosis, as is usually stated. They consist of elastic tissue. Elastosis occurs in about 90% of scirrhous and infiltrating lobular carcinomas. Elastosis is a much less prominent feature of medullary carcinoma and the other “specialized” types of breast cancer. Focal elastosis is found mainly periductally and in vascular walls. Vascular elastosis affects veins preferentially. Diffuse elastosis often accompanies the focal varieties. Elastosis is thought to be mainly the result of factors emanating from infiltrating carcinoma cells. These factors stimulate fibroblasts and possibly other cells to produce elastic tissue. Elastosis accompanying duct carcinoma is usually an indicator of early infiltration. Elastosis, in the absence of overt signs of malignancy, needs careful appraisal. The diagnostic significance of elastosis is discussed. Its biological significance in breast cancer is a challenging problem awaiting solution.

On se propose, dans une serie d’articles, de rassembler et de discuter systematiquement les mecanismes elementaires de la cinetique heterogene. Cette discussion permettra de preciser le role de la pression du gaz sur la vitesse d’une reaction heterogene.On s’interesse d’abord aux processus de sorption du gaz et on montre que plusieurs hypotheses sont possibles concernant l’ordre du processus d’adsorption proprement dite (ordre 1 ou 2 par rapport aux sites d’adsorption) et celui du processus de desorption (ordre 1 ou 0 par rapport au gaz adsorbe). Ces hypotheses peuvent se combiner de trois facons differentes seulement pour l’etablissement du processus global. Le calcul cinetique est developpe dans chacun des trois cas. Il conduit pour la quantite adsorbee a l’equilibre (n∞ ) a des expressions en fonction de la pression p qui ne sont autres que les isothermes classiques de LANGMUIR OU de TEMKIN, ainsi qu’a une relation intermediaire que nous proposons d’appeler istotherme d’ELOVICH.

In the presence of hydroquinone, a monohydroxyphenol and polyphenoloxidase the oxidation is preceeded by an induction period. The induction period increases rapidly with the increase of the hydroquinone concentration and decreases by the addition of small amounts of catechol. In the presence of increasing concentrations of the phenol or of the enzyme the induction period decreased and the rate of the oxygen consumption is increased.

Summary. Twelve patients are described who developed well-marked micro-angiopathic haemolytic anaemia in association with metastatic carcinoma. The tumours originated in the stomach in six cases, in the breast in two cases, in the lung in one case and the origin was uncertain in three cases. All 11 tumours studied were found to be mucin-secreting adenocarcinomas. Ten out of the 12 patients were thrombocytopenic. Fibrinogen metabolism was studied in four patients and in each patient the catabolism of fibrinogen was found to be greatly increased despite normal or near normal plasma fibrinogen levels and an absence of overt fibrinolysis. Fibrin degradation products were demonstrated in the serum of five out of six patients. Hyaline thrombi were seen in the small blood vessels in the kidneys and suprarenals in one patient and in the myocardium in two patients, while changes suggestive of organized thrombi were present in the interlobular arteries of the kidneys in three patients. It is thought likely that the microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia develops secondarily to intravascular coagulation brought about by thromboplastins derived from mucin-forming tumour cells which have entered blood vessels, and that contact between circulating red cells and tumour emboli within blood vessels may be an additional cause of red-cell damage.

On introduit la notion de regime mixte et regime pur en cinetique heterogene, le regime pur correspondant au fait qu’un seul des processus elementaires etudies precedemment impose sa vitesse. On etablit ensuite des relations generales valables en regime mixte. L’application de ces relations aux cas des regimes purs permet de retrouver les differentes lois cinetiques et de preciser dans chaque cas l’influence de la pression du gaz sur ces lois.

In 1960 Williams and Azzopardi reported the first case of oat-cell carcinoma of the bronchus associated with the carcinoid syndrome and active production of 5-hydroxyindoles. No similar case has to our knowledge been recorded until recently when Gowenlock, Platt, Campbell, and Wormsley (1964) reported a patient with an oat-cell carcinoma of the bronchus; this secreted 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) in contrast to the conventional 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) secreting carcinoid tumour. Though assay of the tumour for 5-hydroxyindoles was negative, these workers produced evidence that the oat-cell carcinoma in their patient was directly responsible for the endocrine secretion. We now report a third patient with oat-cell carcinoma and associated carcinoid syndrome: this report confirms and extends the original observations. In addition, the relation of oat-cell carcinoma to bronchial carcinoid is discussed.
