2. An interpretation of volcanic and structural features of crater Aitken

Abstract

Detailed observations from the study of Apollo 17 panoramic photography of the Aitken crater are reported which suggest that there has been significant late-stage compressional deformation of the crater and its adjacent highlands. A speculative interpretation of eruptive activity and drain-back events within Aitken is presented, which leads to the conclusion that hummocky topography within certain cones represents collapsed lava rather than extrusive domes. That is, eruptive activity within Aitken probably commenced with an explosive cone-building stage, followed by lava eruptions from cones and fissures, and ended with drain-back restricted to the relatively deep lava ponded in the vents.

7. An Analysis of Self-Energized Hydrostatic Shaft Seals

Abstract

An analysis of a self-energized hydrostatic shaft seal operating with incompressible fluid in the laminar regime is presented. Dimensionless results are optimized for maximum stiffness. Comparisons are made between full annulus and sectored annulus recess configurations. It is shown that translational and torsional stiffnesses are critically dependent upon orifice size. A sample problem is included to demonstrate use of equations, design curves and criteria developed.

Abstract

A rapid quantitative method for the determination of the phthalic anhydride content in phthalic alkydnitrocellulose lacquers is described which uses an infrared absorbance ratio technique applied to solvent free films of isolated vehicles. The method is dependent upon the previously determined nitrocellulose concentration. The potential extension of this principle to the determination of the phthalic anhydride content in enamels is discussed and illustrated. (Author)
