From January, 1958 through December, 1964, 380,788 inhalation therapy procedures were performed by the Inhalation Therapy Service at this institution. A summary of these procedures and recommendations for organization of an inhalation therapy service based on this experience is presented. The following must be provided: physician responsibility; properly trained inhalation therapists; routine rounds for equipment inspection and bedside nursing education; adequate equipment; a system of records and equipment inventory; sterilization of equipment; an ambulatory patient clinic; a respirator ward; facilities for patient evaluation and research; and a program of continuing education.
