A number of amines in presence of hydrochloric acid were titrated potentiometrically (pt-electrode calomel electrode in amine) against a sodium nitrite solution. E. M F. was found to use steadily with the addition of standard sodium nitrite till the equivalence point. At the equivalence point there was a sharp jump in potential in each case.

A number of new antis prepared from phenylglyoxal, β-naphthylglyoxal hydrates and aromatic amino compounds have been reported earlier.1-3 A few more anils, from p-bromopheoylglyoxalhydrate and various aromatic aminos, have been synthesised to add to our existing knowledge of this type of compounds. The reaction products were characterised from theirβ-nitrophenylhydrazones, 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones, semicarbazones and oximes.

2-Acetamido 6-naphthalene sulphonyl chloride was condensed with ammonia and twentynine different primary aromatic amines in presence of either dry pyridine or a mixture of dry pyridine and acetone; hydrolysis of the resulting acetamido compounds furnished the corresponding N6 -substituted 2-amino 6-naphthalene sulphonamides. These compounds were screened for their antibacterial properties and it was observed that while some of the N1-substituted 4-amino 1-naphthalene sulphonamides were active against \(S. Aureu\) and \(E. coli,\) none of the N6 -substituted 2-amino 6-naphthalene sulphonamides possessed any activity. These findings indicate that the position of the groups in the naphthalene ring bears a relationship with the activity of these compounds.

o-Nitroaniline, p-nitroaniline and 2 : 4-diaminophenol dihydrochloride have been estimated by titrating them potentiometrically against potassium iodate in presence of hydrochloric acid and o-phenylenediamine, o-aminophenol, p-aminophenol and diphenylamine against nitrous acid, using a platinum electrode coupled with a saturated calomel electrode at 15°.

The formation of bluish green colour produced by the interaction of \(p\)-dimethyl amino anil of ,\(\beta\)-naphthyl glyoxal and Fe (Ill) has been studied to determine the composition, stability and other characteristics of the chelate formed. The absorbance curves of the complex show maxima at 600 mµ. 1 he com position of the chelate has been established by three different methods, Job, slope and molar ratio. The chelate has a composition of 1:2. The stability constant of the chelate has been calculated by molar ratio method and comes out to 1.2 x 1012. The value of R T log Kat 25° is -16.61 K cals/mole.

Anils of \(\beta\)-naphthyl glyoxal were obtained by condensing with aniline, \(p\)-toluidine, \(p\)-chloroaniline, m-nitroaniline, \(p\)-nitroaniline, α-naphthylamine, \(\beta\)-naphthylamine and \(p\)-dimethylamincaniline. Derivatives prepared for characterising them were 2:4 DNP semicarbazones and oximes. The structure of the ands was found by running the IR spectra of the ands in the KBr medium. From the stretching frequencies of > C= O and azomethine group -CH=N as well as from the nature of the derivatives obtained, the structures were proposed.

Condensation of ethyl cyclo-octan-1-one-2-carboxylate with a number of primary aromatica mines is carried out at 180-190° when the respective anilides are obtained. Some of these areeasily cyclised either with sulphuric acid or poly-phosphoric add to give 3:4-hexamethylenearylsubstituted -2-quinolones.&nbsp

Synthesis of some Dihydrobenz (1,3) oxazine Derivatives

Aromatic amino-azo dyes and aromatic hydrery-azo dyes of ethylene-\(bis\)-N1-sulphanilamide have been prepared by coupling tetrazotised ethylene-\(bis\)-N1-sulphanilamide with various aromatic hydroary compounds and aromatic amines.

3,5-Diaryl (or alkylaryl)-imino-1,2,4-dithiazolidines on being allowed to react with aromatic primary amines afford the related N-(diarylformamidino)-N’-aryl or alkyl thiocarbamides. The 5-methylphenylamino­ and 5-ethylphenylamino-3-phenylimino-1,2,4-dithiazolines, both with aniline, however, afford one and the same product, the N-(diphenylformamidino)-N’-phenylthiocarbamide. The formamidinothiocarbamides, so obtained, on oxidation undergo ring closure to appropriately substituted 1,2,4-thiadiazolidines.

p-NN-Bis-2'-cyanoethylaminobenzaldebyde has been condensed with cyanacetamide, ethylaceto. acetate, acetophenone, rhodaninef nitromethane, iso-nicotinic acid hydrazide, hydantoin, thio-hydantoin and several acyl glycines and the products identified by both chemical and physical methods. Preliminary ex­periments on the use of the rhodanine derivative as a reagent for copper, mercury and silver and the aldehyde itself as a reagent for detecting acyl glycines by paper chromatography, have yielded encouraging results, p-NN-Bis-2'-cyanoethylaminobenzoic acid and p-NN-bis-2'-cyanoethylaminobenzylidene malonic acid and its sec. hydrazide have also been prepared.

The kinetics of alkylation of primary, secondary and tertiary aromatic amines with methyl iodide and ethyl iodide in pure nitrobenzene medium is reported. Frost-Schwemer treatment of two step consecutive second order reactions has been utilized for the separation of rate constants in reactions with primary aromatic amines. The results are discussed in the light of basicity, nucleophilicity, electronic and steric effects.

Ethyl 2-carbethoxycyclooctan-1-one-2-acetate, prepared by condensing ethyl cyclooctan-1-one-2- oarboxylate with ethyl bromoacetate, on hydrolysis gave cyclooctan-1-one-2-acetic acid. This acid on refluxing with seven different primary aromatic amines furnished substituted pyrrol-2-ones.

A convenient procedure for the derivatization of primary and secondary amines, as benzylthiuronium dithiocarbamates, is described. Eighteen amines have been derivatized. The derivatives are readily purified and thus useful for characterization.
